2007 California Golden Bears Picks & Predictions
California won 10 games last year and trounced Texas A&M in the Holiday Bowl. So in coach Jeff Tedford’s five years in Berkeley, the Bears are 43-20 and have won three bowl games. But California is just 1-4 vs. USC under Tedford, and they still haven’t won a conference title since sharing the PAC 8 championship back in 1975. The Bears simply outscored most of their opponents last season, with their 12th ranked offense staying ahead of their 91st ranked defense. This season Cal returns eight starters on offense, including junior QB Nate Longshore and Wide receiver DeSean Jackson, who might be the best punt returner in college Football. But the defense lost six starters, including three All Pac 10 selections. They do return, however, three quarters of the defensive backfield and a good kicker. The road schedule is manageable, and they get tennessee and USC at home. This team will again score a lot of points, so ultimately their success depends upon the defense.
