If the Atlanta Thrashers and the Tampa Bay Lightning play to their recent home/away splits tonight, this should be a lower scoring game than many people expect.

Granted, the Thrashers are coming off of a 7-1 loss at Carolina, but that snapped a streak of seven consecutive road Unders for them. We don’t expect them to give up another seven-spot to Tampa Bay here, so look for a return to normalcy. The Thrashers are averaging just 2.27 goals per game on the road over the entire season, and they have now gone 12 consecutive road games without scoring more than three goals.

The Lightning are coming off of a 2-1 home win over that same Carolina team, and that brings the Under to 9-3 in the last 12 Tampa Bay home games. The Ning have played better than expected defensively at home this year allowing 2.90 goals per game, but they have underperformed offensively as of late, averaging only 2.40 goals over that last five games.

That sounds like a nice recipe for an Under here.

It is not too often that you can get Roy Halladay at this price, so the Toronto Blue Jays simply ooze value vs. the New York Yankees today. Not only is Halladay a perennial Cy Young candidate, but he has always fared well vs. the Yankees, allowing three earned runs or less in nine of his last 10 starts against them. He also loves pitching in Yankee Stadium, and he has allowed a grand total of two earned runs in his last four starts in the House that Ruth Built, covering 30 innings. Do not forget about the Toronto bullpen either as that unit finished second in the American League in bullpen ERA last season and should be even better this year once B.J. Ryan is back and healthy.

Now granted, Chien-Ming Wang has been downright dominant at home during his brief Yankee career. However, the Yankees have lost his last three starts vs. the Blue Jays, and he allowed 12 earned runs in just 17 innings over those outings, making him vulnerable as a big favorite here. Also, we still do not have much faith in the Yankees long relievers, so if this becomes a battle of the pens, we think the Blue Jays would have the advantage.

The bottom line here is that Toronto has the better starting pitcher and the better bullpen, while the Yankees obviously have a big edge offensively. However, given Halladay’s history against them, look for the Yankee bats to be kept relatively quiet here as the Blue Jays spring the upset.

St Louis went from a World Series title to a 78-84 record last year. The drop-off in 2008 might be just as significant, if not more so, as the Cardinals look very much like one of the worst teams in the NL heading into the regular season. Let’s not forget how the Cards started off 2007, getting outscored 20-2 in a three game sweep at home at the hands of the New York Mets, as part of a 1-7 start to the season at Busch Stadium. There’s little reason to expect this season to start any differently.

The Cardinals offseason was nothing short of an unmitigated disaster. Among the departed are many of the key cogs in their 2006 World Series run: shortstop David Eckstein, third baseman Scott Rolen, center fielder Jim Edmonds among others, without acquiring adequate replacements. Make no mistake about it – this isn’t a mediocre team, it’s a bad team, not yet priced correctly by the betting marketplace.

Jeff Francis was the Rockies undisputed ace last year, carrying the starting rotation for a good portion of the season before other guys stepped up in September, allowing the Rockies to go on their record setting late season push into the playoffs. Francis won a career high 17 games last year. He went 9-4 after the All Star break and 2-1 in the playoffs. Francis has completely shut down the Cardinals in six previous career starts against them: 4-1 with a 2.28 ERA. And with Luis Viscaino signed to set-up for closer Manny Corpas, six strong innings from Francis should be more than enough to earn the Rockies their first victory of the 2008 campaign. Yes, the Memphis Grizzlies are prime candidates for a letdown here, but at least they have been playing better lately and there is no way we could give points with the Los Angeles Clippers right now.

The Grizzlies are on a nice 7-1 run against the spread, so while their 114-111 upset win on the road last night was almost certainly their biggest win of the season, it is not as if that effort came totally out of the blue. Memphis is a respectable 4-4 straight up during this current run, and they are a perfect 5-0 ATS in their last five road contests.

The Clippers are on a 10-game losing streak, which does not exactly exude confidence in a small favorite like this. They have found little consolation at home this season either, going just 12-24 straight up in their own building.

While a Memphis letdown may be likely, we feel they should still be able to beat this pathetic Clippers club considering each team’s current form.

Yes, the Memphis Tigers and Michigan State Spartans are both capable of scoring in bunches, but defense wins championships and we look for both defensive units to rise up here.

Memphis may be one of the flashiest teams in the country, so it is easy to forget the fact that they do have a tenacious defense that has gotten them through some games this season when they were less than spectacular offensively. The Tigers are allowing just 61.1 points per game on 38.6 percent shooting for the entire year, and prior to allowing 74 points to Mississippi State on Sunday, they had allowed 63 points or less in six straight games.

Now Michigan State is more known for their defense, and with good reason. They too are limiting opponents below 40 percent shooting this year, at 39.8 percent, while permitting 61.7 points per contest. They have not allowed more than 65 points in any of their last six contests.

While some fans may be disappointed, look for defense to prevail in this matchup tonight.
