Free MLB Picks: Minnesota Twins (150)
Mon Apr 7 ’08 4:05p
Young Nick Blackburn pitched very well in his Major League debut for the Minnesota Twins, while Javier Vazquez of the Chicago White Sox is maddeningly inconsistent, giving the Twins value at this price.

Blackburn allowed only one run on five hits while posting six strikeouts vs. just one walk in seven innings of a tough-luck 1-0 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. Blackburn looks like the type of pitcher that will be tough his first time through the league, and he has the support of a Minnesota bullpen that is probably the best part of the whole team. We even think the Twins will scrape together some runs vs. Vazquez this afternoon.

Vazquez’s seasonal debut certainly left a lot to be desired, as he allowed four earned runs and an unacceptable nine baserunners in just five innings of work in a 7-2 loss to the Cleveland Indians. He also did not exactly fool the Minnesota batters the last time he faced the Twins here in Chicago last September, as he was touched up for four runs on 11 hits in six innings of a wild 11-10 White So victory.

We look for both starters to come close to their first performances, which should lead to a Twins upset at nice odds.

MLB Free Pick: Twins +150

Free MLB Picks: Cleveland Indians @ Los Angeles Angels u8.5 (100)
Mon Apr 7 ’08 10:05p

The Under is now 8-1 in the last nine head-to-head meetings between the Cleveland Indians and the Los Angeles Angels, and given the performances of tonight’s starters last week, we expect more of the same tonight.

Cleveland’s Fausto Carmona received a couple of Cy Young Award votes with good reason last year, and he has picked up right where he left off. Carmona allowed just one run and four hits in his seasonal debut, a 7-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox. This will also be the first time that the Angels have ever faced Carmona, which should make him doubly tough.

Believer it or not, Joe Saunders of the Angels was actually even better in his first start, tossing eight scoreless innings while allowing four hits at Minnesota. Saunders has shown some flashes during his brief career, and he had an excellent spring, so it looks like he may be on edge for a break-out year. He is also a perfect two for two in Quality Starts vs. the Indians the last two years, allowing a total of two earned runs and just eight hits in 13.2 innings.

This looks like a good old-fashioned pitchers’ duel and a rather safe Under.

Free MLB Pick & Odds: San Francisco vs. San Diego: April 7th

San Diego Padres (-112)
Mon April 7 ’08 4:05p – MLB Odds

The San Francisco Giants , now without Barry Bonds, no longer , look like a contender and will in my humble opinion, very lucky if they get to the .500 mark this season. The Giants offense, has scored only 12 runs , along with 2 Homers in 6 games to open their season, and are off a 7-0 loss yesterday to the Brewers in the finale of a series that saw them get out scored 25-8. With four-time Cy Young Award winner Gary Maddux taking to the hill for visiting Padres today, the Giants offensive woes look to continue. It must be noted that Maddux is 5-0 with a 2.83 ERA in nine starts vs the Giants , and went 2-0 with a 1.86 ERA, last year , and has posted a 2.72 ERA in winning his last six starts at AT & T Park. With that said, look for the Giants, suffering to continue here this afternoon, as the Padres push forward with a run that has seen them win 11 of the 12 meetings in this series ! Play on the Padres

Free MLB Baseball Pick: Florida vs. Washington Picks & Odds April 7th

Florida Marlins @ Washington Nationals o8.5
Mon April 7 ’08 7:10p – Baseball Odds

The Marlins have been one of the few consistent ‘Over’ teams in the first week of MLB action, with a 5-1 mark to the Over in their first six games. The primary culprit has been a spotty pitching staff – both the starters and the bullpen are struggling mightily early on. Marlins starter Andrew Miller has been a part of the problem, not the solution to it. Miller struggled as a Tiger rookie last year, and he was awful in his 2008 debut, failing to make it out of the fifth inning against the Mets. Facing a Nationals lineup that has a better chance than most to hit lefties, we can expect Miller’s troubles to continue here. And let’s not forget that Florida’s bullpen threw 13.1 innings of work in their just concluded three game set in Pittsburgh, not exactly the freshest unit as they take the field tonight.

The Nationals offense was stymied yesterday by Kyle Lohse and the Cardinals bullpen behind him, but that was the exception, not the rule, for Washington so far this season. The Nats had scored 27 runs in their previous five games before yesterday’s shutout, and should have plenty of opportunities against Miller tonight. But don’t expect another outing from Tim Redding like we saw in his first start of the season, seven innings of one hit shutout baseball. The most consistent thing about Redding’s MLB career has been it’s inconsistency from one start to the next, unable to follow up quality performances with similar quality efforts. And the Marlins have been hitting righties (and righties only) to start the season, entering tonight’s game hitting more than 100 points better against right handers than against lefties. With game time temperatures in the upper 50′s, look for the Nats and Marlins to enjoy a high scoring ballgame at the Nationals new stadium, getting up and over the total. Take the Over.

NHL Hockey Betting: St. Louis Blues vs. Columbus Blue Jackets

St. Louis Blues (130)
Sun Apr 6 ’08 3:05p

Neither the St. Louis Blues nor the Columbus Blue Jackets are going to the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs, but that does not mean value can’t be found in the Blues as a nice underdog in the season finale.

After all, the Blue Jackets have now lost four straight games and seven of their last eight, so frankly, they do not deserve to be this big of a favorite over anyone. They have scored a grand total of 12 goals in their last eight games (1.50 goals per game), lowering they average for the season to a poor 2.30 goals per contest.

The Blues shut out Columbus 5-0 last night in the front end of this home-and-home season ending series, bringing St. Louis to 4-1 in the last five meetings with the Jackets. Furthermore, the last three St. Louis wins in this series have not been close, as prior to last night’s shutout, the previous two wins were by 5-1 and 6-1 counts.

This line looks like an overcompensation for Columbus being home, so take St. Louis at this price.

Free MLB Baseball Picks: Arizona vs. Colorado

Free MLB Baseball Picks: Arizona Diamondbacks (-115)
Sat Apr 5 ’08 8:05p

Brandon Webb has always been a fast starter while Jeff Francis did not pitch well in his seasonal debut that, fortunately for him, did not count due to a rainout, so the Arizona Diamondbacks get the call as small road favorites tonight.

Webb is always a Cy Young candidate, and he has been virtually unhittable during the month of April. The Diamondbacks are 14-4 as a team in all of Webb’s April starts over the last three seasons plus Opening Day of this one, when he allowed two runs and just three hits in six innings of a 4-2 win at Cincinnati, and he has an April ERA of 2.85 over this period. Also, if we flash back to last season when the Rockies won 21 out of 22 games before getting swept in the World Series, their only loss during that unbelievable stretch came to Webb 4-2 right here in Colorado.

Francis is the ace of the Rockies staff, but he did not look like it in St. Louis on opening day when he allowed five runs in 2.1 innings, only to have the outing wiped out when the rains came and the game could not be resumed. He has also been mediocre in his last four home starts vs. Arizona, with two good outings and two shaky ones. The end result was 13 earned runs and 35 baserunners allowed in 23.2 innings of work.

We look for Webb to continue his April dominance here at a rather modest price.

Final Four Picks: Memphis Tigers vs. UCLA Bruins

Memphis @ UCLA u133.5 (-110)
Sat Apr 5 ’08 6:05p
The Memphis Tigers have been running up some scores lately, but we expect the stingy defense of the UCLA Bruins to slow the Tigers down here, resulting in a much lower scoring game than many people expect.

UCLA has one of the best defenses in the country, and they will no doubt make a concerted effort not to let Memphis get their running game going, as the Bruins know that the Tigers are capable of running away with this game if they are not at least slowed down. The Bruins are allowing just 58.9 points per game this season while holding their opponents to 42.0 percent shooting, and they have been downright suffocating lately, surrendering 55.4 points per on a miniscule 35.3 percent shooting to their last five opponents.

While the Tigers are known for their exciting offense, many people overlook their excellent defense which is holding opponents to 38.8 percent shooting over the entire year. Considering that the Bruins will slow the pace of this game when they are on offense also, we think that the Memphis defense should have no trouble keeping UCLA around 60 points or so at the most here.

The bottom line is that if UCLA is successful in containing the Memphis transition game, we do not see this contest getting out of the 120s.

Free Expert NBA Picks for April 5th 2008

Free NBA Picks: Philadelphia 76ers -6.0
Sat April 5 ’08 7:05p
Iguodala scored 30 points to lead his Philadelphia 76ers to a hard fought 109-104 win at Atlanta on Friday night, and in the process clinched a play off spot for his team. But do not expect a let down from the Sixers as they still have plenty to play for, as they are tied for Washington for the 5th seed, and Toronto just one game behind in 7th. Atlanta is still hoping for a post season appearance, but after last nights loss, maybe a little disheartened in let down situation tonight. Final notes & Key Trends: Philly 14-3 ATS L/17 against a team with a losing record, winning SU by an average of 14.8 PPG. Play on the Sixers – Courtesy of Alex Smart

Free NBA Picks: Atlanta Hawks vs. Philadelphia 76ers Over 206
Sat April 5 ’08 6:05p
NBA action won’t garner much attention or headlines tonight, at least not until SportsCenter dominates our TVs following the second game of the Big Dance between Kansas and North Carolina. BUT the Prez has a double-dip NBA System Play-II — between the 76ers and Hawks — a 62 percent winning combination over the last five seasons that’s keyed by a team clinching a postseason birth, something the 76ers did on Friday night.

The Hawks entered last night’s game, the first half of a home-and-home series against the 76ers, with a five-game win streak. While the five-game run came to an end, Atlanta found easy buckets against Philadelphia’s defense, and did so on a night when their floor general, Mike Bibby, shot poorly. Atlanta is still clinging to that No. 8 postseason-seed, and travel to Philadelphia for the backend of the double header.

Despite losing their previous two games against the Hawks this season, the 76ers found a way to win on the road — and clinch a playoff spot. Sixers’ Andre Miller was asked to be more aggressive offensively by his head coach in January, and just recently, Cheeks asked Miller to push his teammate even harder. The result has the veteran guard averaging 12.0 assists in the past four games, this after averaging only 5.9 helpers in the eight previous affairs.

Both teams want to push the ball — and over the last six games they have. The Hawks are averaging 113 points per game. Philly has averaged 110 points in their last six wins. The Sixers have won two straight and 21 of their last 28. Both teams limited their bench in Friday’s contest. Only seven players from each team received any real court time (more than 15 minutes).

Don’t expect either unit to be at their best defensively tonight. Not during the second game of a home-and-home series that plays itself out 75 games into a long and grueling season. -Courtesy of The Prez

Free NBA Picks & Basketball Odds: Utah Jazz vs. San Antonio Spurs

Free NBA Picks: San Antonio Spurs @ Utah Jazz u197.5 (-110)
Fri Apr 4 ’08 8:05p – Basketball Odds

This posted total between the San Antonio Jazz and the Utah Jazz seems very high when you consider that none of the last 21 head-to-head meetings between these clubs here in Utah have surpassed 192 points.

As usual, the Spurs have been an excellent Under team this season, with the Under going 43-31-1 overall including an excellent 23-14, 62.2 percent on the road. Those road contests are averaging a combined 187.2 points, about 10 points less than this posted total. Furthermore, only three of their last 13 road games vs. Western Conference opponents have exceeded 197 points.

Now granted, the Jazz have been a great Over team the last couple of years, but the Spurs are one of the few teams that has been able to slow them down somewhat. These teams have met five times here in Utah since the start of last season including the playoffs, and those five games have averaged just 179.6 points combined.

The Jazz won the only meeting here so far this year 97-91, and we expect the total output in this game to about the same 188 points as that first encounter. Courtesy of LT Profits

NBA Free Pick: Spurs, Jazz Under 197.5
