Overview: Arkansas returns all five starters from a 14-16 team, though that’s not the best thing in the world. The key was the return of senior forward Michael Washington (6-9, 230), who decided to wait one more season instead of bolting to the NBA. Last year, he averaged 15.5ppg and 9.8rpg. Forward Michael Sanchez (6-8, 236) returns as a solid post presence who averaged 5.9ppg and 4.9rpg. He’s been bothered early on by plantar fascitis, a foot ailment. Freshman Marshawn Powell (6-7, 220) will see more time early due to the injury. Another tough issue facing the Razorbacks is the suspension of sophomore Courtney Fortson (14.8ppg, 5.9apg), the starting point guard last season. Freshman Julysses Nobles (6-1, 170) is a late signee, who has had to step up and has done a very good job. The best player may be sophomore Rotnei Clarke (6-0, 184), a dangerous shooter despite his size, who averaged 12.2ppg last year. Wing Jemal Farmer (6-5, 213) is another talented newcomer and JC transfer who is a big-time three-point shooter, who will contribute right away.
Outlook: There are a lot of issues on this team already, though bringing back Washington should help. They just need to mesh the newcomers with the veterans and hope that Fortson returns to the team.
