Overview: Mike Montgomery took over at Cal and made them a contender right away. Now, the Bears are a slight favorite in a weakened Pac-10 that has lost a ton of talent. Four starters return including senior guard Jerome Randle (5-10. 180), an explosive scorer, who averaged 18.3ppg and 5apg. He’s a leading contender for Conference Player of the Year. At shooting guard, senior Patrick Christopher (6-5, 215) provides great size. He averaged 14.5ppg last season, but has to improve on his long-range shooting. Up front, the Golden Bears are small but quick. Theo Robertson (6-6, 235) is undersized but strong, averaging 13.1ppg last season, but just 3.8rpg at power forward. Senior Jamal Boykin (6-8, 230) provides interior defense (9.6ppg, 6.4rpg). They have to replace 7-0 center Jordan Wilkes, and have a few contenders. Sophomore Max Zhang (7-3, 225) is raw and should see time. Junior Harper Kemp (6-8, 255) adds beef in the post. Off the bench, sophomore Jorge Gutierrez (6-3, 185) and sophomore D.J. Seeley (6-4, 185) are solid players, who will need to provide more minutes.
Outlook: This is a very solid team that has an outstanding backcourt and a decent frontcourt. But depth up front is an issue as is quality size.
