Overview: The Rebels lose guard David Huertas (18.1ppg) and big man Malcolm White (7.2ppg, 5.7rgp), who transferred to LSU, but even with those players, they were unable to make the NCAA Tournament and have not made it since 2002. The key in the backcourt is junior guard Chris Warren (5-10, 165), who led the team in scoring last year at 19.6ppg before tearing knee ligaments in Game 11. Junior Eniel Polynice (6-5, 225), who averaged 10.7ppg and 5.3rpg in 2007-08, also returns after missing all but one game last season due to a leg injury. Throw in sophomore guard Trevor Gaskins (6-2,204), who averaged 5.9ppg in 2007-08, and never played last season due to a knee injury, and you have three experienced players, who couldn’t contribute last season due to injury. They should blend in well with holdover guard Terrico White (6-5, 211), who was the conference’s Freshman of the Year, after averaging 13.7ppg last season. Up front, the Rebels have major question marks. Sophomore Murphy Holloway (6-7, 225) was the most solid returning player with 8.4ppg and 6.6rpg last season. Senior DeAundre Cranston (6-9, 251) is a bruiser who can rebound and defend. There’s a lot of expectations for freshman Reginald Buckner (6-8, 210), who was Mr. Basketball in Memphis last year.
Outlook: Andy Kennedy suffered through a tough third season, but if the guards he has returning from injury can stay healthy, this team has a chance of making it back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in eight years.
