Overview: Craig Robinson, the brother-in-law to Barack Obama, took over a program that went 0-18 in conference the previous season and led them to a 7-11 conference mark. They do have to replace point guard Rickey Claitt (7.4ppg, 2.7apg), a solid but unspectacular player. Taking over will be senior Josh Tarver (6-3, 190), who averaged just 3.9ppg last season. They also like freshman Jared Cunningham (6-3, 170), a true point guard, who originally committed to Arizona State. At the wing, 6-5 Seth Tarver (6-5, 210), the bigger brother, averaged 8ppg and 5.4rpg last season and was the team’s best defender in their 1-3-1 zone. Up front, 6-11 senior Roeland Schaftenar (10.5ppg, 3.3apg) returns as one of the best passing big men around. How many bigs leads their team in assists? That’s not necessarily a good thing. Freshman Joe Burton (6-8, 260) is another big body, who should help up front on the boards. Omari Johnson (6-9, 215), who averaged 6.6ppg and 3.1rpg and junior Daniel Deane (6-8, 245, 5.3ppg, 4.1rpg) add more size and experience.
Outlook: The Beavers should continue to improve this season and make another jump in the Pac-10. They are probably one or two players away, but nobody wants to play against their 1-3-1 zone or their Princeton-style offense.
