Overview: The Commodores don’t get all the athletes that the elite teams get, but they are improving in that aspect. That’s because sophomore wing Jeffery Taylor (6-7, 210) is a big time athlete who can slash and is getting better from the perimeter. he averaged 12.2ppg and 6.2rpg, and is just scratching the surface on his immense talent. The backcourt is led by point guard Jermaine Beal (6-3, 205), a stocky guard who averaged 12.5ppg and 3.2apg. He’s not flashy, but makes good decisions. Sophomore guard Brad Tinsley (6-3, 210) is coming off a strong freshman season where he averaged 11ppg and shot 41.1 percent from beyond the arc. Tinsley could be pushed by freshman John Jenkins (6-4, 215), who shot nearly 50% from three-point range in high school. At center, junior A.J. Oglivy (6-11, 250) is a finesse player from Austraila, who averaged 15.4ppg and 7.1rpg last season. He was hampered by numerous injuries and worked hard in the offseason to improve his strength and conditioning. Sophomore Andre Walker (6-7, 220) is the team’s best defender, who can guard multiple positions and play power forward or small forward. Sophomore Steve Tchiengang (6-9, 240) is just a sophomore, who has raw skills who averaged 3.6ppg and 3.2rpg last year. Another key player up front is junior Darshawn McClellan (6-7, 240), who is a very good rebounder and interior post player. Sophomore Lance Golbourne (6-8, 225) added 5.1ppg and 3.3rpg off the bench last year.
Outlook: The Commodores are a scary team because of a nice inside-out combination, but they don’t have the talented backcourt that Kentucky and Tennessee offers.
