Overview: The Huskies lose two key starters in Jon Brockman (14.9ppg, 11.5rpg) and guard Justin Dentmon (14.4ppg). Fortunately, Lorenzo Romar returns one of the best guards in the nation in Isaiah Thomas (5-8, 185), who led the team in scoring at 15.5ppg and added 3rpg and 2.6apg. Thomas is a 5-8, stocky guard who can move to shooting guard while junior Venoy Overton (5-11, 185) runs the point (5.8ppg). Overton is an outstanding defender, but has to work on his offensive game. Freshman guard Abdul Gaddy (6-3, 190) can play the point or the wing. He’s a highly-touted player, who originally committed to Arizona, before changing his mind after the retirement of Lute Olson. Up front, the Huskies will need to replace Brockman. They Huskies also suffered a loss when 6-9 JC transfer Charles Garcia was ruled ineligible. At wing, senior Quincy Poindexter (6-6, 215) needs to expand his perimeter game. He averaged 12.1ppg and 5.8rpg and loves to abuse smaller players down low. At the post, sophomore Darnell Gant (6-8, 225) was a role player last year (3.1ppg, 3.3rpg) and will now have to deliver with starters minutes. At center, junior Matthew Bryan-Amaning (6-9, 240) added 6ppg and 4rpg mainly off the bench, but also struggled with injuries.
Outlook: Washington can score and has the makings of a great backcourt with the addition of Gaddy. However, they will lose the rebounding edge with Brockman gone. He’s nearly impossible to replace.
