2009 NFL Wildcard Playoffs: Baltimore vs. Miami Betting Odds, Picks & Predictions

The only game between the Dolphins and Ravens in the post-season was in a 2001 First-Round Playoff game, won by Baltimore by a 20-3 score. That game is Miami’s most recent postseason appearance and the Ravens’ most recent postseason win. Miami is 5-2 against Baltimore in regular season games, but lost by a score of 27-13 when the teams played back in Week 7 of this season. The Dolphins were victorious in the previous game, a 22-16 overtime decision when the teams met in Week 15 of last season. That was the Dolphins’ only win of the 2007 season. Miami’s other victories in the series came at Baltimore in the 1997 season and at home in the years 2000, 2002, and 2003.

5dimes.com oddsmakers currently have the Baltimore Ravens listed as 3 point betting odds favorites against the Miami Dolphins in Sunday’s 2009 Wild Card Playoff Game with the games over/under sitting at 38 total points

College Basketball Picks: Denver vs. UL Lafayette: January 3rd 2009

Denver U +7.0 (-110) – Sat January 3rd ’09 6:00p
Click Here for more college basketball picks from Touthouse.com

The visiting team has dominated the head-to-head series between Denver and UL Lafayette, going 11-5 against the spread the last 16 meetings. and we look for the Pioneers to continue that pattern this evening.

Denver actually covered both meetings last season, and they had won five consecutive games year before getting nipped 54-52 at New Orleans on Thursday. Yes, they are 0-6 SU on the road, but it is not as if they have been getting blown out, going 3-2 ATS, and they are now visiting a venue where they have had success.

Meanwhile, the Cajuns are just 4-8 SU and 2-4 ATS overall, and they have already lost four games here in their own building. In fact, they have a scant average winning margin of just +1.9 points at home, making them very vulnerable as big favorites like this. In fact, Lafayette is just 4-7 ATS in this favorite role since the start of last season, going only 6-5 SU in those games with an AMOV of +3.7.

We look for a typically tight contest between these two, making these generous points worth taking.

College Basketball Betting Picks & Odds: Dayton vs. Toledo: January 2nd 2009

Now we are not normally in the habit of laying nearly double-digits on the road, but this in-state matchup between the Dayton Flyers and the Toledo Rockets seems like a total mismatch.

The Flyers are off to a 12-1 start with their only loss coming vs. Creighton on the road, which is certainly no disgrace. Dayton did cover the number in their only other true road game, which happened to be vs. another MAC opponent in Akron.

The Flyers are winning with defense, as they are only allowing 55.8 points per game on a scant 34.3 percent shooting from the floor. They have been even better than that during their current four-game straight up winning streak, allowing 53.0 points per contest on a miniscule 66-for-199 shooting. They should have no problem shutting down a weak Toledo offense that averages just 55.6 points overall this season.

While Dayton is winning their games by an average margin of +12.5 points, Toledo is losing their contests by an average of -10.9 points. This is because besides their offensive troubles, the Rockets are also allowing 66.5 points per game on 42.9 percent shooting. Thus, it is no small wonder that Toledo is 2-10 SU despite playing a less than imposing schedule.

If both of these teams simply play to their averages, Dayton would win this game by approximately 12 points. However, given that all the matchups favor the Flyers here, we actually expect an even bigger victory.

Virginia Tech vs. Cincinnati Free Orange Bowl Betting Pick from LT Profits

Free Orange Bowl Pick: Virginia Tech +2.5 (-110) – Thursday January 1st ’09 8:15p
College Bowl Prediction Courtesy of LT Profits – Visit Touthouse.com for More Winning Bowl Picks

The Cincinnati Bearcats went a surprising 11-2 this season, but keep in mind that they play in the weak Big East, and we look for the more experienced Virginia Tech Hokies to prevail here.

Virginia Tech usually likes to win ugly, and this year was no exception. Still, they did finish at 9-4, thanks to a defense that was among the best in the nation allowing just 17.5 points and 277.2 total yards per game. We expect their defensive unit to have success here vs. a Cincinnati offense that keeps shuffling its quarterbacks, as Dustin Grutza and Tony Pike are expected to split time here.

Compounding the problems for the Bearcats is the fact that they have no real running game to speak of, averaging a modest 121.3 rushing yards per game on a weak 3.6 yards per carry. Thus, we feel that Cincinnati will struggle to generate much of anything offensively vs. the staunch Hokies defense, and that their best chance to score may come off of short fields created by turnovers and special teams.

The problem there is that Virginia Tech has excellent special teams and they are conservative offensively. Sure, the Hokies are averaging a lowly 22.2 points per game, but given their defense, that is just fine as they do not turn the ball over much due to their style.

The major knock against the Hokies is that they often play not to lose rather than to win, but these teams are like mirror images in that regard, except that Virginia Tech has historically done it better. They have also faced arguably tough competition, as the ACC is stronger than the Big East and Tech owns an impressive non-conference road win at Nebraska.

Finally, do not forget that entering this bowl season, ACC bowl underdogs were 12-3-1 against the spread the last five years, and Miami Florida and North Carolina State have both improved on that record in recent days. We look for Virginia Tech to do the same with an outright win.

Penn State vs. USC: Free Rose Bowl Betting Pick from Bob Harvey

Free Rose Bowl Pick: Penn State vs USC Under 45.5 – Thu Jan 1 ’09 5:00p
Bowl Betting Prediction Courtesy of Bob Harvey – Click Here for more College Bowl Picks

I can hear the voice of the retired Keith Jackson right now in that deep and distinctive voice “It’s the Granddaddy of ‘em all”.

That’s the truth. In fact USC beat Penn State 14-3 in 1923 in what was then called the Tournament of Roses game. Fast forward to January 1, 2009. This years Rose Bowl games features #4 USC again #6 Penn State. The pressure is on the Trojans who are making their fourth straight Rose Bowl appearance. They’re favored by nine points in what is virtually a home game for them. An SC victory would give the Pac-Ten a perfect 5-0 record in the post-season.

Both teams were one score shy from playing for the national title. USC had its annual clunker against Oregon State while Penn State lost to Iowa on a last second field goal. Defenses are likely to dominate today. The Trojan D headed by future NFL stars Rey Maualuga, Brian Cushing and Taylor Mays allowed the fewest points per game in the nation at 7.8 ppg No team has given up fewer points or total yards per game (206.1). The average of 122.8 passing yards allowed is particularly impressive because it’s nearly 37 better than any other team even though most of USC’s opponents had to throw a lot after falling well behind.

Don’t sell the Nittany Lions short went talking about defense. Penn State has been tough to score on as well allowing just 12.4 ppg. I’m already thinking UNDER!. I do share the belief of that a good defense will beat a good offense (unless that offense is Oklahoma’s).

On offense Penn State is averaging just over 40 points and USC 37.5. Both players have talented QB’ in Daryl Clark and Mark Sanchez. Clark has completed 60 percent of his passes for 2,139 yards. He’s also thrown for 17 touchdowns vs. just four picks.

If your a “stataholic” you’ll need these impressive numbers. Trojan signal-caller Mark Sanchez had a 159.1 quarterback rating, throwing for 30 touchdowns and 2,794 yards.Whether he’ll have the time to throw is another question. The rushing games are good for both teams. Penn States Evan Royster has gained 1,202 yards this season while the “tailback by committee” which includes Joe McKnight, Stafon Johnson and C.J. Gable have combined to rush for 1,892 yards and 19 TD’s.

The two teams had one common opponent this year- Oregon State. The Nittany Lions destroyed the Beavers 45-14 back in September.
If your looking at which team is hotter coming into this years game, USC has won nine straight and that includes three shutouts and only one game in which their defense allowed more than ten points.
The line opened at USC -9 ½ and is still in that general vicinity. The total is set at 45 ½.

70 degree temperatures, clear skies and a light breeze are forecast for Pasadena. It will be one of those chamber of commerce days that will get everyone in cold weather destinations.

USC’s defense is playing for a place in history, More than a few College experts believe that if the Trojans can put the clamps on Penn State’s spread offense, these Trojan defenders could go down as one of the best squads ever. They’ll be ready and while a shutout probably isn’t in the cards, Penn State will be lucky to score 17. Take this game to go UNDER the total. USC wins and covers giving the big ten another post-season spanking.

NHL Betting: Detroit Red Wings vs. Chicago Blackhawks Betting Odds & Picks

Detroit Red Wings @ Chicago Blackhawks u5.5 (NHL Betting Odds) – Thursday January 1 ’09 1:05p
The Chicago Blackhawks and the Detroit Red Wings reignite their original 6 rivalry today in the Winter out door classic in Chitowns Wrigley Field on New Years day. Both teams expect this to be a hard fought physical affair .

It’s expected to be mostly cloudy in Chicago on Thursday with a high of 34 degrees and a 20 percent chance of snow, and the players , have told the media the ice conditions were far from favorable, which will make for a less than cohesive game. This I am betting will effect scoring in a negative way .

Hawks D-man Brian Campbell was quoted as saying:
“It will be like a playoff game, “I think the guys are revved up for it and want to show what they can do on national TV.”

Cristobal Huet is expected to start in goal for the Blachawks .In seven starts, Huet was 6-0-1 with a 1.41 GAA, and has given up just four goals during a current five-game winning streak. Ty Conklin, who has played in out side games before is listed as the starter for the Red Wings .He is is 6-0 L/6 along with a stingy 2.04 GAA vs the Hawks.

Considering the above mentioned conditions, the attitude of both teams, and the starting goal tending , I am expecting a low scoring hard hitting game to be on the agenda.
