While we have a lot of respect for the Big 12, we feel that the 26-9 San Diego State Aztecs have been underrated all year, and they get the call here over the 23-14 Baylor Bears.

Remember that this contest is in Madison Square Garden, and the key here is how these teams have performed on the road. The Aztecs are a respectable 5-5 straight up on the road, although they have been slightly outscored in those games by a scant average of -1.3 points. Remember also that they dismantled another Big 12 team in this tournament in Kansas State 70-52, and San Diego State is a very bettor-friendly 18-12-1, 60.0 percent against the spread this year.

Baylor may come out of the tough conference, but they are just 4-8 SU on the road while getting outscored by -4.9 points per game. They have also not looked as impressive as San Diego State in their three NIT wins so far, with two of their three wins so far being by exactly two points. It is also worth noting that Baylor is actually ranked behind the Aztecs in the Pomeroy Ratings, as San Diego State is ranked 29 and the Bears rank 35.

We look for those ratings to come to fruition tonight with a San Diego State victory.

NHL Pick: Calgary Flames (-125) – Monday March 30th 2009 9:35p
The San Jose Sharks have earned home ice advantage through out the upcoming NHL play offs. So tonight against their hosts the Calgary Flames, a semi motivated effort would not come as a complete surprise ,especially considering the amount of nagging injuries the team has been suffering through. With star Patrick Marleau(37 G),limping and expected to miss this tilt, Im betting on the Sharks current sub par road run ( 4-7-3 L/14) including 3 straight losses to be extended vs a Flames side that is a bankroll expanding 25-9-4 on home ice this season. Final notes & Key Trends: Flames are 8-2 L/10 at home in this series. Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff is 6-2-0 with a 2.63 goals-against average and one shutout in his last eight games vs the Sharks. NHL Pick: Dallas Stars (100) – Monday March 30th 2009 10:05p
The slumping Dallas Stars have lost six straight games, but they are still in playoff contention and that motivation should be good enough for them to get well vs. the lowly Phoenix Coyotes. The Stars are on the verge of an epic choke, as they were seventh in the Western Conference when this slump began. They have now dropped to eleventh, eight points behind the St. Louis Blues for the eighth and final playoff spot. If Dallas is serious about its post-season aspiration, the Stars simply must beat teams that they should beat from here on out, and the Coyotes seem ripe for the picking. Phoenix has virtually nothing to play for here, as they are 14 points out of a playoff spot with seven games to play, and the Coyotes have lost 20 of their last 27 games overall. Also, the road team is 6-2 in the last eight head-to-head meetings between these teams, and aside from their faint playoff hopes, the Stars are also seeking double revenge after losing the last two meetings with Phoenix by an identical 1-0 score, with one loss coming in a shootout. Look for Dallas to avoid getting shut out for a third straight time by the Coyotes, and for the Stars to emerge victorious here. NHL Free Pick: Stars +100 – Courtesy of LT Profits

The Nets have had their chances to win games down the stretch here in March, but they’ve blown seven fourth quarter leads this month. In their game at Minnesota yesterday, a wire-to-wire loss, a blown fourth quarter lead wasn’t the problem at all. Head coach Lawrence Frank: “That was just an extremely disappointing defensive performance. It was very tangible to see: Minnesota — their talk, their effort, their energy level, was significantly higher than ours…. From an enthusiasm, effort, energy standpoint — the willingness to dig and fight — we didn’t show it in the way we’ve shown it in some of the past games.

New Jersey reserve guard Keyon Dooling: “We weren’t aggressive, we didn’t play hard, we didn’t play together. It was just a bad performance. From a mental standpoint, we weren’t prepared and that team dominated us from start to finish. They dominated the game, controlled the game and we were never in the game, and it was a good old-fashioned butt-whipping.” Vince Carter: “This is unacceptable. We feel like we’re capable of being in the playoffs. This was an opportunity to jump-start us into accomplishing that. We took a step back.”
I’m always looking to support NBA teams off particularly poor performances, and we’ve got the Nets in that role tonight; the type of game where we can expect maximum energy and effort from the short home favorite. Meanwhile, the Bucks are in a free-fall of their own, losers of five straight and ten of their last twelve. Their last road win came in the first game following the All Star break, nearly six weeks ago. On the last game of a long, disappointing road trip, don’t expect the Bucks to be able to match the Nets energy tonight. 2* Take New Jersey.

The Louisville Cardinals exploded for 103 points in their rout of the Arizona Wildcats in the Sweet 16, but we feel that just gives us added value on the Under here in their Elite Eight matchup with the Michigan State Spartans.

After all, while Louisville is obviously capable offensively, the main reason they have gotten to this point is their defense, The Cardinals have allowed just 61.8 points per game on a miniscule 39.4 percent shooting from the floor over the entire year, and according to the Pomeroy Ratings, they are second in the nation in adjusted defensive efficiency, allowing only .833 points per possession.

Also keep in mind that their offensive explosion Friday came vs. a middle-of-the-pack Pac-10 team that is not known for defense, and they will not have as much success running today vs. a defensive-minded Spartans team that is almost as stingy as Louisville.

Michigan State is allowing 63.0 points per game on 41.5 percent shooting, and they held a very good Kansas offense to 62 points Friday. The Spartans are ranked number 10 in adjusted defensive efficiency by Pomeroy, allowing .887 PPP, and they also play great perimeter defense, allowing only a 31.5 percent success rate on three-point attempts.

These are two defensive-minded teams, so we look for the pace of this game to more closely resemble the Michigan State/Kansas matchup on Friday than the game where Louisville ran an outclassed Arizona team off the floor.

The Villanova Wildcats have certainly looked impressive while running teams off the floor in this tournament, but never forget that defense wins championships, so we will side with the gritty Pittsburgh Panthers in this all Big East Elite Eight battle.

After all, the Panthers are now 31-4 this year, thanks to a defense that has limited opponents to 64.2 points per game overall on just 40.8 percent shooting from the floor. This is not to say that the offense has not done its part, as according to the Pomeroy Ratings, Pittsburgh is now second in the country in adjusted offensive efficiency. It also helps that they lead the nation in offensive rebounding percentage, thanks to DeJuan Blair.

Now we have a lot of respect for Villanova, and they really are a Final Four caliber club. However, they just drew a terrible matchup here, as they would probably have a better chance of advancing vs. any other of the Elite Eight clubs this year except North Carolina. Yes, the Wildcats did beat Pittsburgh 67-57 during the regular season, but that was in Philadelphia.

Here on a neutral court, we simply feel that Pittsburgh is the better, more balanced team, and we do not expect Villanova to have as easy a time running the floor as they have the first three games of the tournament.

As long as Blair avoids foul trouble, the Panthers should prevail.

The wrong team may be favored here, as the Big 12 has shown that it may be the second best conference in the country throughout this tournament, and we look for the Kansas Jayhawks to dive that point home further when they face the Michigan State Spartans tonight.

The Jayhawks have quickly gotten over getting knocked out in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament by a Baylor team that is now in the semifinals of the NIT, as Kansas has won the first two games of this tournament by double-digits, covering the spread on each occasion. Also, remember that Kansas dismantled Missouri recently, the same Missouri team that easily beat Memphis last night.

Meanwhile, Michigan State was in a dogfight with USC on Sunday, and it is not encouraging that their fellow Big 10 Conference mates Purdue lost by double digits to Connecticut last night. Sure, this is a regular season rematch and the Spartans easily beat Kansas 75-62 that day. That game was in East Lansing however, and the differences between these two conferences should be more apparent on this neutral court.

While revenge is just a minor motive in a game of this magnitude, it certainly does not hurt when the team seeking the revenge is the better club from the better conference.

Thanks to those that bet and supported our GOY winner on the Chicago Bulls last night, and lets fire away with an ugly ‘Dog Friday. We took a shot with Memphis on Monday night and the young Grizzlies are showing improvement despite a lack of wins and ability to finish games. Memphis has lost eight of their last nine games entering the week, but are 5-4 ATS. They were beaten soundly by Miami Monday, and Memphis is tied for the leagues fewest road wins. The Grizzlies figure to bring a solid and motivated effort Friday as they play with four days rest and redemption for a home loss to Sacramento five weeks ago. That embarrassing home loss to shorthanded Sacramento was also the most points that Memphis has allowed in their last 15 games. Sacramento is struggling and the Kings are the leagues worst defensive team. Newly acquired forward Andres Nocioni has missed three straight games entering the week (knee), and while the Kings also are rested, I believe the Grizzlies are capable of a rare road win. Take the 3 points with the young and improving Grizzlies.

The Flames earned a big win over the Red Wings a few nights ago, the second time that they’d beaten Detroit recently. Those “Detroit results” notwithstanding, they haven’t been playing particularly well of late. In fact, they’re just 3-6 their last nine games, going 1-6 against “other” opponents, besides the Wings. That includes a 2-0 loss at Pittsburgh, last night.

Note that the Flames are a money-burning 2-8 (-5.9) when playing the second of back to back games this season. The last time (at Carolina on 3/6) that they played the second of back to back games, they lost by a score of 6-1.

The Blue Jackets last played on Tuesday, losing at Tampa Bay. They’ve still won six of their last eight games though and they’ve been tough at home all year, going 23-11-2. They lost both games at Calgary but they beat the Flames (3-1) when the teams faced each other here at Columbus. Including that result, the Jackets are 5-1 the last six times that they hosted the Flames and 11-4 in 15 all-time meetings here. Consider Columbus

Whether it’s been ftb or bkb, Ben Burns has DOMINATED with his Thursday plays the past few years. Ben made a single NBA bet last Thurs, a DOUBLE-DIGIT WINNER with Dallas ‘under’. If you liked that EASY victory, you’ll LOVE his TOP RATED TNT TOTAL FOR MARCH. Ben already nailed his TOP TNT side (AGAIN) this month & now he completes the SWEEP!

NBA Basketball Betting: Lakers vs. Pistons Odds & Picks: March 26th 2009

Los Angeles Lakers vs. Detroit Pistons u193.5 (-110)

The Los Angeles Lakers and the Detroit Pistons have gone Under in four of their five meetings the last three years, and we look for these clubs to continue this pattern tonight.

Sure, the Lakers have topped the 100-point mark in six of their last seven games, but it is no coincidence that the lone Under came vs. an Eastern Conference team (Philadelphia) and that five of the six Overs came vs. Western teams that play the same run-and-gun as the Lakers. The Pistons have always done a good job of slowing the pace vs. LA, and we expect this game to be played at their pace at home.

Now the Pistons are actually playing to more Overs than usual this season, but the Under is still 36-32-2 in all of their games and their home games are averaging a combined 189.1 points, which is safely below this posted total. Given that they do not want to try and run with the Lakers, look for Detroit to employ the same strategy they have employed in their recent meetings.

In fact, the Lakers have managed just 89 and 78 points respectively in their last two trips to Motown, and while they should pass those numbers here, we still look for a safe Under.

NBA Free Pick: Lakers, Pistons Under 193.5 (-110)

Jacques Lemaire and the Wild lost to the Rangers at Madison Square Garden last night, which extended a current run of road futility to 5 straight efforts. Minny now on tired legs go across town to play a very talented and suddenly cohesive Scott Gordon coached Islanders team. The Isles are 9-2-2 in their L/13 at home almost exclusively in the underdog role, and are 5-1-1 in their most recent battles on Long Island. Needless to say, a win for a Wild team that has scored an average of just 2 GPG, in their last 11 away tilts , looks very uncertain. With said, I’m betting for rising young star Kyle Okposo to be the catalyst behind the value lined home dog ticket getting cashed by NY Islander betting backers……Play on NYI
