The Atlanta Braves beat the Colorado Rockies 4-1 here in the altitude last night, and we are looking for a similarly low scoring game tonight.

Jason Marquis is going to the All-Star Game for the Rockies, as he is 11-5 with a 3.61 ERA and 1.30 WHIP, impressive numbers when you consider how high his home stadium is. In fact, Marquis has a 3.72 ERA here at Coors Field, suggesting that his overall ERA would be closer to 3.00 if he pitched at sea level. Marquis also comes into this game in peak form, as he has tossed 17 scoreless innings in his last two starts while allowing a total of just nine hits.

Now Jair Jurrjens may be just 6-7 for the Braves, but his key numbers are actually better than those of Marquis. Jurrjens has an excellent 2.91 ERA and 1.26 WHIP, but he has gotten very little run support and that does not figure to change tonight. He has also owned the Rockies, as he allowed one run and just three hits in seven innings in his only start against Colorado this season after hurling 7.2 scoreless innings the last time he pitched here at Coors last year.

Finally, the Under is 13-6-1 in the last 20 starts Jurrjens has made on grass, as well as 26-8 in the last 34 Rockies games overall.

MLB Free Pick: Braves, Rockies Under 9.5 (-115)

Chicago White Sox (-105) over the Minnesota Twins
The White Sox are in a slump vs the Twins this year having not won in the Twins Cities yet. However, look for Gavin Floyd to put an end to that today as he takes the mound vs their division rival. White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski said of the team’s recent struggles in Minneapolis. “Tomorrow’s a new day. We can lose 100 in a row, but the next day is always a chance to win.” Gavin Floyd has been pitching great so far this year having posted a 3-0 record with a 1.02 ERA in his previous five starts. He says that he feels better then ever. Minnesota has been a little on the rough side winning for only the third time in its last nine home games. Floyd will face Twins pitcher Glen Perkins (4-4, 4.38) after getting scratched from Wednesday’s game against the Yankees due to flulike symptoms. The White Sox have hit Perkins well as he has a 5.56 ERA against them. Look for Gavin Floyd to control the game and the White Sox batters to knock Perkins out early. Lopsided victory for the Pale Hose.

Final series before the 2009 All-Star Break and today brings great action. A wonderful pitching matchup shapes up in LA as the Angels Jared Weaver and the Yankees Andy Pettitte take the mound against each other. Also, look for another pitchers duel to take place as John Smoltz and the Red Sox go against Gil Meche and the Royals. Two Big name starters will try to keep form as we head into the Mid Summer Classic. Have a profitable day!

Chicago Cubs vs. St. Louis Cardinals Odds & Picks: July 10th 2009

The Cubs have underachieved this season and they are better than their .500 record indicates as they have battled numerous injuries, but were still the preseason favorite to win the National League pennant. Chicago is finally getting healthy and they actually stand just one game behind the Cardinals in the loss column entering today. The Cubs also provide value at a rare home underdog price and they have been a much stronger team at home this season with a 25-16 SU mark, compared to just 16-25 on the road. My pitcher performance ratings predict a solid bounce back effort from Chicago’s Rich Harden who is coming off his worst start of the season last Saturday when he allowed 7 runs in just two innings versus Milwaukee. Harden had pitched well in his prior two starts with a 2.19 ERA and 1.459 WHIP and he has a strong 77/32 strikeout/walk ratio in his 13 starts this season. Meanwhile, the Cardinals’ ace Chris Carpenter qualifies in a negative 42% road favorite letdown situation after his easy 10-1 win last Sunday.

Play CUBS (+1.5 run line).

After struggling throughout the month of May to the tune of a 2-2 mark with a 6.32 ERA, lefty John Danks was spectacular throughout the month of June going 2-3 with a 2.91 ERA. He’s coming off another dominating effort against the Kansas City Royals where he tossed 7.1 innings of shutout ball en route to securing his seventh win of the season. The effort increased his scoreless innings streak to 19 1/3rd innings, and he boasts a 1.51 ERA during his L/5 starts. He defeated the Twins in his lone start at home against them this season, and in his career vs. Minny, the lefty is 4-3 with a 5.33 ERA & 1.57 WHIP.

Opposing the recently streaking southpaw will be the Twins Nick Blackburn who enters his 18th start of the year off a masterpiece against the Detroit Tigers. The righty scattered seven hits through nine innings of work, and almost tossed his first shutout; Brandon Inge spoiled it with a two-run shot in the 9th. He’s been lights out at home where he’s a perfect 4-0 with a 2.32 ERA & 1.21 WHIP in seven overall starts; Twins are 6-1 in those outings. He’s 1-1 vs. the Palehose this year, and in eight career starts against the White Sox, Blackburn is 3-4 with a 4.08 ERA & 1.45 WHIP.

While Chicago comes into this one red hot with one of their hottest hurlers on the bump, Blackburn is unbeaten in this venue and the Twins will most definitely come ready to play after getting rolled up and smoked by the Yankees the L/3 days. The Metrodome has always been a house of horrors for the White Sox, 1-9 L/10 visits, and I look for that trend to continue in the first game of this MLB betting series.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Philadelphia Phillies Odds & Picks: July 10th 2009

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Philadelphia Phillies u9.0 (-110) – Fri July 10th 2009 7:05p

Zach Duke of the Pittsburgh Pirates has finally regained the fine form he displayed as a rookie this season, while Joe Blanton has been on a nice role for the Philadelphia Phillies, so look to go Under at Citizens Bank Park Friday night.

Duke has been a disappointment the last couple of seasons, but he has matured nicely this season, going 8-7 while pitching for a losing team with a nice 3.20 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 118 innings. He has reeled off five consecutive Quality Starts and owns eight such starts in his last nine outings. Duke is facing a Phillies lineup that is batting a paltry .238 vs. left-handed pitchers here at home over this entire season.

Meanwhile, Blanton has turned things around nicely after a poor starts to this season. He has seven Quality Starts in his last eight appearances, and he allowed only four runs in the lone non-quality effort. He was downright dominant in his only start vs. the Pirates last season, allowing only one hit in seven scoreless innings, and he is catching a Pittsburgh team that has a .219 team batting average over the last 10 games.

Finally, the Under is 19-7-2 in the last 28 Pittsburgh games overall and 6-2 in the last eight Philadelphia games, and based on this matchup, look for both streaks to get extended here.

MLB Free Pick: Pirates, Phillies Under 9 (-110)

OVER 8.5 Cincinnati Reds/New York Mets:
The All Star break can’t come soon enough for the Mets or for Reds starter Bronson Arroyo. New York is in the midst of a horrible slump and Arroyo has been downright awful for the past month. Arroyo (8-8, 5.85) is suffering through one of the worst periods of his career, as he is 1-4 with a 8.42 ERA in his last 5 starts. He’s allowed a ridiculous 21 home runs this year in 103 innings pitched. He is 5-2 lifetime against the Mets, but the way he’s been pitching, I wouldn’t expect a great effort right now. Mets rookie Fernando Nieve (3-2, 2.73) started off the season on fire, but has regressed a little in his last two efforts. He’s allowed 7 runs on 17 hits in his last 9 innings pitched. He’ll look to get back on track tonight against a very good Reds offense. We definitely see this one going way over the 8.5 total.

OVER 9.5 Atlanta Braves/Colorado Rockies:
Two hot teams headed into the All Star break look to finish off the first half on a winning note with the Braves visiting Coors Field and the Rockies. Derek Lowe will take on Ubaldo Jimenez in game 2 of the series. Colorado took game 1 last night 7-6. Derek Lowe (7-7, 4.56) is very lucky he pitched so well in April and May, because he has been terrible since then. He’s 0-4 with a 8.61 ERA in his last 5 starts, allowing 43 hits in just 23 innings. I don’t know if he’s simply lost it, or is battling an injury, but he better get it figured out quick if the Braves expect to contend in the second half. Jimenez (6-8, 3.86) has had a very good year and looks to be legit as the Rockies will remain serious wild card contenders in the second half. He’s allowed 10 runs in his last 19 innings of work, including getting roughed up a little in two of his last three starts, so he may benefit from the break as well. Look for a fairly high scoring game tonight at Coors Field.
