The reigning World Series champions are tearing the cover off the ball right now. The Phillies are hitting .297 over their past 17 games and averaging 7.1 runs per game during that stretch. Sunday, The Phils put on another power display hitting, four two-run homers in a lopsided win over the Cardinals, The big flies from Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Raul Ibanez gave Philadelphia a NL leading 138 home runs.

Ibanez has four homers and 13 RBIs in 10 games since the All-Star break. Howard is batting .381 with four homers and 12 RBIs in the last 12 while Rollins has hit .344. Those big numbers have helped the Phillies win 15 of their last 17 games. Philadelphia is now third in the majors in runs scored and homers and second in OPS.

The Diamondbacks are also heating up offensively. The Snakes have hit .305 over their last seven games and have scored a total of 45 runs. However they’ll need a solid effort from Jon Garland to keep them in the game against the high octane Philadelphia offense. Garland is 5-9 with a 4.41. He’s gotten three runs or less of run support in 11 of his 12 starts and has a 1-7 record to show for it. Garland has faced Philadelphia twice in his career and is 0-1 with an ERA of 9.90. Garland though has been tough in his last three starts overall posting a record of 2-1 with an ERA of 2.57

The Phillies will counter with Jamie Moyer who is 9-7 with a high 5.65 ERA. Moyer, unlike Garland, has benefited from plenty of run support but could easily be in double-digits in the loss department. The 46-year old Moyer is 2-1 with a 3.45 ERA in three starts in Arizona. However he’s been a gopher ball machine this season allowing 21 homeruns in just over 106 innings. That problem could be even more magnified at hitter friendly Chase Field.

The Diamondbacks have been cashing the OVER with regularity this season posting a record of 32-19-1. The Diamondbacks bullpen is ranked 26th in the league and their 30th ranked defense brings back memories of that old Michael Jackson joke. What do Michael Jackson and the Diamondbacks have in common? They both wear a glove for no apparent reason.

All attempts at comedy aside, the stats and trends point to an OVER play tonight with a lean towards Philadelphia.

Detroit Tigers vs. Texas Rangers

The Detroit Tigers played last night and looked asleep at the wheel in a 5-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox. Now after traveling half way across the country to Texas to play the Rangers in Arlington, I’m betting they stay in a state of slumber.

The Rangers starting pitcher Tommy Hunter (2-1, 2.17 ERA) is currently in top form and is off six strong innings where he allowed one earned run on Tuesday against the Red Sox for his second Major League win. It was his third quality start of the season. He has gone 2-1 with a 1.52 ERA over his last four starts to lower his ERA to 2.16 . The young righty has been his best at home this season where he owns a 2.74 ERA with a 2-1 record . More of the same good work is on tonights agenda vs a Tigers team that is hitting just .241 in this L/7 games and has batted well below the Mendoza line on the road this year.

Meanwhile, his pitching opponent Armondo Galarraga (5-8, 4.82 ERA) has been a fairly consistent cog in his teams pitching rotation, this season, but despite of some recent top notch efforts has still had a hard time securing wins because of his teams lack of run support. Galarraga’s team is just 2-11 in night games this season, where he has been at his worst this season as is evident by a bloated 5.24 ERA, which is not a good omen vs a Texas team that plays their best at home behind a consistent offense that has averaged 5.4 RPG via a .271 BA.

Final notes & Key Trends: Detroit is 2-12 vs. strong base running teams like the Rangers averaging 0.85 or more stolen bases per game over the last few seasons. The Tigers are 5-16 as a road underdog of +100 to +150 this season.Tigers are 0-8 in Galarragas last 8 starts as a road underdog.Rangers are 21-9 in their last 30 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.
Play on the Texas Rangers

OVER 10.5 Kansas City Royals/Baltimore Orioles:
A battle of really bad lefties tonight at Oriole Park at Camden Yards between the Royals and Orioles. There is virtually nothing to get excited about in this series except the fact that the Orioles will be calling up their top pitching prospect, Chris Tillman to pitch on Wednesday. Back to tonight, Bruce Chen (0-5, 6.58) goes for KC. Chen has been abysmal as you can see by his numbers. I don’t really know how they can justify sending him out there every fifth day until I see. Baltimore will counter with Rich Hill (3-3, 7.64), who for some reason keeps hanging on in the Baltimore rotation. He’s allowed 64 hits while walking 37 in just 55 innings. He’s been particularly abysmal in his last 5 outings, with an ERA of 11.00 in 18 combined innings. This should be his last chance with the Orioles.

UNDER 7 Pittsburgh Pirates/ San Francisco Giants:
Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum (10-3, 2.45) is well on his way to contending for a second straight Cy Young award and tonight he should have an easy time with the struggling Pirates offense. Lincecum should be extra motivated tonight as he’s coming off of his worst outing of 2009 last week against the Braves. He allowed 4 runs in just 5 innings of work in the loss. Even with that effort, he’s 2-1 with a 2.93 ERA in his last 5 starts. He faced the Pirates on July 17, and gave up 1 run in 7 innings pitched. He was outdueled that night by tonight’s opponent, Paul Maholm, who pitched 8 shutout innings that night. By the way, the Giants won that game 2-1 in extra innings. We expect more of the same tonight with these two pitchers dueling all night.

New York Yankees vs. Oakland Athletics Betting Odds & Predictions: July 26th 2009

New York Yankees vs. Oakland Athletics

The New York Yankees had their eight-game winning streak snapped by the Oakland Athletics here at Yankee Stadium yesterday, but we look for the Bronx Bombers to begin a new streak in emphatic fashion today.

After all, the Yankees are still averaging 5.55 runs per game in their new home, while the light hitting Athletics are averaging only 3.92 runs per game on the road. Now Oakland starter Dallas Braden actually own a nice 3.40 ERA in 124.1 innings, but he has rarely faced an offense as potent as this.

The last time he faced a hot offense, he was lit up for six runs and 10 hits by the LA Angels two starts back. He will find pitching in this hitter-friendly park far more difficult than pitching in the spacious McAfee Coliseum in Oakland that he calls home.

Granted, Sergio Mitre is a bit of an unknown in the American League, but he did have some nice moment for the Florida Marlins in the National League and he did pitch respectably in his Yankee debut, allowing just three earned runs in 5.2 innings of a 6-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles. Mitre can be tough his first time through the AL, and he is facing an Oakland lineup that is hitting only .246 on the road for the entire season.

Look for the Yankees to bounce back strong from that loss yesterday, giving Mitre enough run support to come away with the Run Line victory at a decent price.

Minnesota Twins vs. Los Angeles Angels

Get the brooms ready for the Angels who are going to finish off a four-game sweep of the Twins at the Big A.

Does anyone need any convincing about how good this Angel team is? The Halo’s started the season without injured pitchers John Lackey and Ervin Santana. There was the tragic loss of rookie Nick Adenhart and the season ending injury to set-up man Scott Shields. The Angels are presently without Tori Hunter and Vlad Guerrero who are both on the DL. Juan Rivera hasn’t played for week and on and on it goes. With all that adversity the Angels are still kicking butts and taking names. They’ve won eight in a row, nine of their last ten and 12 of their past 13. In those 13 games the Angels have been without Hunter and Guerrero and have actually picked up the pace. They’ve scored 100 runs (7.7 per game) and are batting .326 as a team with double-digit hit totals in nine of those 13. The Angels have made things look easy. They’re batting .401 with runners in scoring position over the past 13 games.

The Twins are reeling. After Saturday’s 11-5 loss, a game in which the Angels scored nine-runs in the fourth, Minnesota has lost five of the six games on their west coast and they’ve been outscored 39-14 during their four-game losing streak. Right now the Twins and for that matter the American League can’t slow down this Angel jugggernaut.

Not that pitching has made much of a difference in this series, for either team, but Ervin Santana will go for Anaheim whil rookie Anthony Swarzak goes for the Twins. Santana, who is struggling to regain his all-star form of a year ago, is 3-5 on the year with an sky high ERA of 6.79. Swarzak comes in with a 2-3 ledger and a 4.15 ERA.

The Angels have abused Twins pitching in this series. Minnesota’s starters, relievers and even closer Joe Nathan have all struggled leaving manager Ron Gardenhire scratching his head.

The way the Angels are hitting right now it’s tough to imagine anyone this side of Toronto being able to shut them down. That’s why there going to get the nod (again) in the series finale.

OVER 9.5 Baltimore Orioles/Boston Red Sox:
The Red Sox dominance over the Orioles has continued this weekend as the Sox have won the first two, although the O’s were in both games. I expect the same today, with the Orioles being able to put up some runs against aging John Smoltz. Smoltz (1-3, 6.31) has really struggled since his return to the majors, his first season in the American League. He’s only started 5 games, but has yet to make it past the sixth inning. This puts a bit more pressure on the Boston bullpen, which had been dominant through mid June, but has been a bit shaky more recently. The Orioles should at least be able to put up 6 runs or so this afternoon. Baltimore counters with rookie David Hernandez (2-2, 3.55), who has done a really nice job in his first season in the bigs. He’s been up and down from the minors a few times, but looks like he’ll stick this time around. He pitched brilliantly against the Yankees on Tuesday night, allowing 1 run in 6 innings.

OVER 9.5 Texas Rangers/Kansas City Royals:
Why is Sidney Ponson still employed in the major leagues? He’s 1-6 with a 7.63 ERA, but that doesn’t even tell the whole story. His last 5 starts, he’s 0-2 with a 12.71 ERA. Terrible, just terrible. I can’t figure out how he still has a job, but as long as he does, we’ll keep betting against him. Meanwhile, Kevin Milwood and the Rangers have had a turnaround season (9-7, 3.44). He hasn’t been great lately, pitching to a 6.44 ERA his last 5 starts, so the offense will have to keep the pressure on Ponson, which should not be a problem.

Weekend series wrap up today with not many good matchups. One to look at is the game at Dodger Stadium as Chris Volstad and the Marlins take on Jason Schmidt and the Dodgers. This has been a closely contested series so far with each team taking one game.

Chicago looks for their third straight win as they take the field on Saturday afternoon. They’ll have to beat Johnny Cueto who is 8-6 with a 3.67 ERA. He is 0-2 with a 12.34 ERA in his last three starts, giving up 16 runs and 24 hits in just 11.7 innings pitched. Cueto is 2-3 with a 3.66 ERA all-time against the Cubs. One of his two wins came earlier this season when the Cubs were banged up, but they are finally getting healthy and Chicago hits .299 all time against Cueto with Ryan Theriot (7-16), Derrek Lee (6-15), Geovany Soto (5-14), Alfonso Soriano (4-12) and Reed Johnson (2-5) doing the best. Chicago is 28-18 at home and 27-19 in daytime games this season.

Kevin Hart who will make his third start of the season for Chicago and he is 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA as a starter, giving up just 3 runs in 10 innings of work. Hart is coming off a win over the Nationals in which he gave up two runs and five hits in five innings. He’ll now be facing a struggling Cincinnati lineup that is averaging just 3.5 runs per game in their last six and 3.9 runs per game during the daytime this season. Cincinnati has lost four straight and eight of their last 10 games overall.
