As we have stated a couple of times, posted totals this low are usually reserved for when two star pitchers face other, and while Ubaldo Jimenez of the Colorado Rockies may barely fit the bill, Josh Geer of the San Diego Padres simply does not.

Geer is 1-4 with a 5.79 ERA in 15 starts in his first full season as a Major League starter. Furthermore, after showing some improvement for a while, he regressed again in his last start when he was roughed up for six earned runs in just 4.2 innings by the normally light-hitting San Francisco Giants. Geer was also hit hard the last time he faced the Rockies, as they reached him for six runs (five earned) in 6.2 innings.

Now Jimenez does have a nice 3.81 ERA despite his 6-9 record, but he has been rather inconsistent lately, alternating Quality Starts and non-quality outings in his last seven starts, putting him in line for a shaky outing tonight. More importantly, the Padres got to Jimenez for six earned runs in only 3.2 innings the last time he faced them here in Petco Park.

There are simply to many question marks for both of these starters for us not to go Over this very low total tonight.

I’m a firm believer in the old adage: ‘if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it’. That’s why we’re heading back to San Diego for Friday night’s free play on Ubaldo Jiminez and the Rockies.

Last night things went perfect for Colorado backers as the Rockies rolled to a 10-1 victory as Aaron Cook earned his 9th win and Seth Smith and Clint Barmes both homered. San Diego has now lost eight of its last nine games and outside of a 10-4 victory over San Francisco in the final game before the all-star break they’ve struggled to score averaging almost 2.5 runs per game. That won’t get it done.

Colorado is now 30-13 since Jim Tracy took over as manager and they’ve been a real cash cow especially on the road. The Rockies are 6th best in the majors with a 25-22 record and +979 units.

On the flip side San Diego doesn’t have much going for it right now. The Padres are 8-22 in their last 30 games and 36-53 overall. They’ve played better at home posting a 23-21 record but the problem is scoring. They average just 3.7 runs per game. San Diego ranks 30th in runs per game, batting average and OPS.

Colorado is 6-3 on the season against San Diego and has taken two out of three games in American’s finest city.

The Rockies are now eight games behind the first-place Dodgers and just a game and a half behind the wild-card leading Giants.

Joe Saunders the LA Angels starting pitcher against the Oakland Athletics is in struggling form. The hurler has allowed a ridiculous 11 home runs in his last six trips to the hill. He has allowed 18 runs in his last three outings overall and owns a ugly looking 1.68 home runs per nine innings average this season. Those are some nasty numbers. The Angels pitching staff as whole have struggled during this campaign, ranking 26 th in MLB , allowing opposing offenses to average 4.74 RPG via a .277 BA for average. The Halos only saving grace has been an offense that has been explosive that continues to find ways to score even without Vlad Guerrero , Tori Hunter out of the lineup . Meanwhile, the A’s starter Trevor Cahill (5-8, 4.67), is also struggling as is evident by a current 0-3 run that seen him garner a massive 11.37 ERA in his last three outings. Considering the pitching matchup Everything points to this being a high scoring tilt. Final notes & Key Trends: Over is 8-0 in Saunders’ last 8 starts overall. In Cahills L/3 starts opposing offenses have piled 31 runs on the board…. Play OVER

Eight of the last 13 meetings between the A’s and Angels have stayed below the total. This evening’s game could also prove low-scoring.

Braden goes for the A’s and he’s been terrific. Over his last three starts, he has a 2.45 ERA and 1.091 WHIP. In nine home starts on the season, he’s got a 2.84 ERA and a 1.193 WHIP. Not surprisingly, six of those nine games have fallen below the total. In his last home start, he limited the Tigers to a mere five hits and one run, through seven complete innings. In fact, including that gem, Braden has allowed two earned runs or less in eight straight starts and three or less in 10 straight. He’s gone at least six innings in nine of those 10 games, too. He went 5 1/3 in the other.

Braden will have the advantage of facing the Angels without Guerrero and Hunter. He’s made four career starts vs. the Angels, all of which have stayed below the total, posting a solid 3.27 ERA in those games.

Santana has admittedly had some trouble in the first half. However, a closer look shows that his struggles have come primarily at home. In three road starts, he’s got a respectable 3.60 ERA and 1.249 WHIP. He averaged nearly seven innings in those three games, two of which stayed below the total. Dating back to last season, Santana has seen 13 of his last 18 road starts stay below the total.

Santana should be very happy to start the second half off in Oakland. He’s made 13 starts vs. the A’s and has allowed three earned runs or less in ALL 13 of them. He also went a minimum of six complete innings in ALL 13 of those games, going more than six in 12 of them. Overall, he’s got an outstanding 1.38 ERA in those 13 games, 10 of which stayed below the total. The last time he faced the A’s, which was here at Oakland last summer, he tossed seven shutout innings, striking out 10 along the way, en route to a 4-1 victory. Consider the Under

Grizzled veteran Jamie Moyer will be in search of his 9th win of the season when he gets the starting nod for the 18th time Thursday night. The southpaw has gotten some tremendous run support his L/3 times out (6.0 RPG), and because of it, sports a 3-0 mark with a 6.06 ERA & 1.35 WHIP during that stretch. He suffered a setback his last time out before the break where he coughed up eight hits (2 HR) and six ER’s through five innings against the Cincinnati Reds. He’s been at his worst under the bright lights at night (3-6 with a 7.09 ERA), but he’s 12-2 with a 3.06 ERA in 14 career starts vs. the Florida Marlins (1-1 in ’09).

Christopher Volstad enters his 19th start of the ’09 MLB betting season off his best start of the year where he notched his first career shutout against San Francisco. He limited the Giants to just five hits while striking out six and walking none through his nine innings of work. Consistency has been his problem thus far as he has a couple three inning outings to his name this year. He’ll be looking to improve upon his 3-5 home mark in this start. He outdueled Moyer in his May 25th start against the Phillies, and is 1-0 having allowed just 10 hits and five ER’s in 13.2 innings against them this year.

The road team dominated the first six meetings between these teams in the first half of the season (5-1), so I’m looking for the home teams to balance that ledger out starting tonight. Moyer’s been the beneficiary of major run support of late, but I don’t foresee that happening again tonight against Volstad who went into the break on top of his game. He’s had relative success vs. Philly in his career, and I look for him to inch his team even closer to the champs tonight with another solid outing. The Fish take G1!!!

The LA Angels when they are healthy are an explosive offense team, but they now start the 2nd half of the season with a few key bats out of the lineup including Torii Hunter Vladimir Guerrero and possibly Juan Rivera who is is day-to-day with a tight hamstring). Considering the Angles banged up wings, the Oakland Athletics look like a very viable wagering option with the very capable Dallas Braden(7-7, 3.12 ERA) on the hill. It must be noted that the As are 7-2 L/9 when Braden starts against a wining team with a win % of .540 to .620 like LAA. The Halos are also at a disadvantage with their starting hurler Ervin Santana(1-5, 7.81 ERA), who has recorded a ugly 0-3 record along with a nasty looking 9.88 ERA in his last three trips to the hill. I know Santana has pitched well in the past vs the As, but all good things must eventually come to end………. Play on the Oakland As

Aaron Cook and the Rockies continue their pursuit of a playoff spot when they open the second half of the season against the Padres.

Cook has sizzled against San Diego in his career and he’s been especially dominate at Petco Park. Cooke is 5-1 with a 1.61 ERA in his last eight starts and is 12-4 with a 2.71 ERA lifetime against the Padres. He figures to improve on those numbers tonight against a San Diego squad that had lost seven in a row, averaging less than three runs per game before erupting for a 10-4 victory over San Francisco in the final game before the break. Overall Cooke is 8-3 with a 3.98 ERA. He along with all-star Jason Marquis have given Colorado a nice 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation.

Offensively, the Rockies remain one of the most dangerous teams in the NL. They’ve scored seven runs or more in three of its last five games, including an 8-7 win over Atlanta on Sunday to enter the break on a high note.

Colorado is 29-13 since Jim Tracy took over as manager and they’ve been a real cash cow especially on the road. The Rockies are 6th best in the majors with a 24-22 record and +879 units.

On the flip side, San Diego doesn’t have much going for it right now. The Padres are 8-21 in their last 29 games and 36-52 overall. They’ve played better at home posting a 23-20 record but the problem is scoring. They average just 3.8 runs per game and if it weren’t for Adrian Gonzalez they’d be dregging in Washington Nationals territory. Gonzalez has accounted for nearly 60% of the Padres offense with his 24 homeruns, 52 rbi’s and 49 runs scored. Even with Gonzo, San Diego ranks 30th in runs per game, batting average and OPS.

Chad Gaudin gets the start for the Padres. He’s 4-7 with a 5.03 ERA but has pitched better over his last three starts posting a 3.20 ERA with a WHIP of 1.07. He’ll need a huge effort tonight if San Diego is to have a shot.

Colorado is 5-3 on the season against San Diego but split their first two series meetings in the border city.

The Rockies are nine games behind the first-place Dodgers but just two back of the wild-card leading Giants. They’ve got the playoffs in mind while the Padres are already making plans for next season. Colorado is the play here.

2009 FBS Independents Conference College Football Predictions – Odds to Win

2009 INDEPENDENTS PREDICTIONS ODDS TO WIN2009 FBS Independents Conference College Football Predictions

Notre Dame: The schedule is tough, but not as difficult as in recent years. It looks a lot more favorable with winnable home games against Navy, Uconn, Nevada, Washington (bad team), Boston College (down year) and Stanford on the road. Washington State in San Antonio should be a win, while they take on their toughest team-USC-at home. This should be Weis’ best team as the have an opportunity to win at least nine games and anything less would be a disappointment. 2009 Notre Dame College Football Predictions

Navy: Navy mixes up their schedule with top teams as well as winnable games so they can win enough to make a bowl game. They open with Ohio State on the road and also have brutal road games at Pitt and Notre Dame. Aside from facing rivals Army in Philadelphia and Air Force at home, they have winnable games against Delaware, Western Kentucky, Temple and Louisiana Tech at home, with Rice and SMU on the road. 2009 Navy College Football Predictions

Army: Army is moving in the right direction with Ellerson, who ran the spread option and will utilize more passing. He just needs more talent to run his offense. They face Eastern Michigan on the road and Duke at home to start the season. It’s certainly a very tame schedule, but they have face Air Force on the road, which means a Commander-in-Chief Trophy is not likely. 2009 Army College Football Predictions

Western Kentucky: The Hilltoppers open with Tennessee on the road. They also face South Florida and Central Arkansas at home and then face Navy to close out the non-conference schedule. It doesn’t really matter who they face in their first year in the Sun Belt as long as they are competitive. Last year, they faced five Sun Belt teams and lost by an average score of 28-16. 2009 Western Kentucky College Football Predictions
