#112 Take Kansas City over New York (Sunday 1 pm Fox) If the Chiefs have any pride whatsoever, they will not let the Giants blow them out this Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium. No question that the Giants have better players then the Chiefs, but this is a statement game for KC. This is their second home game and their first did not go as planned, getting beat by their rivals, the Oakland Raiders. They have played a brutal schedule thus far in 2009 with road games against Baltimore and Philadelphia. I expect them to keep this a low scoring game that is close for 60 minutes. This will be the second straight long travel road game for the Giants and asking them to cover a spread this big in just not in the cards. Play the home dog and watch your money grow. For a number of different reasons I feel the value in this game is on the visitors: Although the Cavaliers or 0-3 to start the season, they are coming off a bye-week and I look for them to be prepared as they head into their matchup vs. North Carolina. After two-sub par games to begin the season whey they only scored 14 points in each, Virginia broke out in its last game with 34 points, but still came away with a loss as Southern Mississippi put up 37. I look for head coach Al Groh to continue to build confidence in his offense though and to implement the same offensive scheme that they used against Southern Mississippi in this weeks contest. While Virginia is 0-5 SU its last five overall, it’s an awesome 10-1 ATS its last 11 vs. North Carolina. After winning their first three games for the first time in 12 years, the Tar Heels fell flat against the Yellow Jackets and lost their ACC opener for the ninth consecutive year last week. They generated only 154 yards in total offense and were down 17-0 before scoring on a long pass play in the fourth quarter. Virginia has had great success vs. North Carolina, and coming off their bye-week, I look for the well-rested CAVALIERS to keep it just close enough to come away with the ATS victory and look for North Carolina to fall to 1-2 ATS this year as a favorite.

OVER 9 Baltimore Orioles/Tampa Bay Rays:
Baltimore is having an abymsal second half. Not a good sign for a team who is very young, yet the O’s and their fans insist that better things are on the way. They have a nice young nucleus of pitchers and position players, but they need that one ace on the mound that they can count on. They had hoped Jeremy Guthrie (10-16, 5.10) would be that guy, but he’s sturggled through an inconsistent season and has regressed in his last few starts, giving up 12 earned runs in his last 19 innings. He’s allowed a league leading 32 home runs as well.

Tampa Bay will send rookie Wade Davis (1-1, 4.07) to the hill tonight to oppose Guthrie. Davis is one that the Rays have high hopes for, even trading Scott Kazmir to make room for him. He’s been up and down, but clearly has a bright future.

Joel Pineiro of the St. Louis Cardinals and Homer Bailey of the Cincinnati Reds are both in fine form right now, so do not look for many fireworks at Great American Ball Park tonight.

Pineiro is actually have an excellent season, and he would be a 20-game winner already if he received any run support. As it stands, he is 15-11 but with a very good 3.24 ERA and an excellent 1.13 WHIP in 203 innings.

He has been very consistent, allowing three earned runs or less in 22 of his 30 starts this season with 21 official Quality Starts, and he has one of the best sinkers in the game, with a nasty 2.42 groundball-to-flyball ratio. Pineiro has also allowed three runs or less in five of his six career starts vs. the Reds, and he allowed only four earned runs in the other effort.

Bailey was highly touted coming out of the minors a couple of years ago, but they may have rushed him up as he bombed badly. However, he has matured nicely this season and he has now allowed three runs or less in seven straight starts. Furthermore, he has two scoreless efforts in his last three home starts, going eight innings in one outing and seven innings in the other.

Look for both hurlers to maintain their form for at least one more start tonight.

The Phillies looked like they were going to walk away easily with the National League East Pennant. As the season grind gets grittier a once NL East powerhouse is emerging to the surface ready to take this division by storm. The Atlanta Braves are 86-70, 4 games back and riding a huge 7 game win streak. The late push has the Phillies on there toes as they have lost 4 of 10 and dropped game 1 at home to the lowly Houston Astros who are a terrible 5-22 LT27 travelling and 28-46 on the road overall. With the Astros getting to the Phillies Ace last night look for them to try to take it to lefty starter J.Happ. Philly 6-2 LT8 in Happ’s starts and 29-10 LT39 at home Philly will be pushing hard, desperately in need of a win where the Astros are 0-4 LT4 in GM2 of a series after winning game 1.

Traditionally teams that have been swept in a recent series come back stronger and win game 1 or 2. Houston beat Philly by a 1 run margin 3 games in a row last series and won 8-2 last night. Look for Philly to win this ballgame convincingly avenging 4 straight defeats to the Astros and make a statement to the Braves that they are the best in the NL east.
