Both of these SEC squads are in the middle of disappointing seasons, with Georgia (3-3) losing back-to-back Conference games to LSU and Tennessee and Vandy (2-4) also losing back-to-back games to Ole Miss and Army. The public will be laying points with a Georgia squad that has won 13 of the last 14 meetings in this series, but Georgia is tough to recommend in this road favorite role, knowing that their defense is allowing 31 points per game this season, with [assing defense ranked 11th in the SEC. With 2 Conference losses already under their belt, Georgia doesn’t have much to play for against a Vanderbilt squad that has covered the spread the last 3 times these two teams have met. Take the points with home dog Vandy, who should be able to keep this game close, with a ball-control offense, averaging 190 rushing yards per game against a Georgia squad that has only won by 11, 4, and 3 points this season.

I’m not convinced that Minnesota is going to find the end zone even once on a very nasty Saturday in Happy Valley. We’re looking at snow, blustery winds and a game time temperature hovering around freezing. Penn State ranks among the nation’s top 10 in rushing defense, scoring defense, total defense, sacks and tackles for loss; a pretty impressive quintet. They’ve yet to allow a touchdown in the first half this season – in fact, they’ve only allowed six first half points through their first six games.

Minnesota is really struggling to get the kinks out of their new pro-style offense. QB Adam Weber has thrown more interceptions than touchdowns this year, bad news for a third year starter. His only weapon, WR Eric Decker, is likely to be a non-factor in these conditions against this defense. The Gophers running game has been inconsistent at best, and they are down to their third string center on offense.

Penn State has the ability to score on defense in these conditions, and their run-first offense is also well suited to move the football on a nasty day. Since the loss to Iowa, the Nittany Lions offensive line has shown dramatic signs of improvement, resulting in back-2-back 500+ yard efforts and 87 points scored. Meanwhile, the Gophers defense is ranked ninth in the Big Ten. They athleticism and speed both on the defensive line and in the secondary – all the big plays and touchdowns here should come from the Penn State side. (#144) 2* Take Penn State.

Now the Pittsburgh Panthers may be 5-1 this season while the Rutgers Scarlet Knights are 4-1, but that is where the similarity between these two teams ends.

Rutgers was blown out at home by Cincinnati on opening week, and to this second, the Brarcats remain the only quality opponent that Rutgers has faced. Yes, they have won four straight games since them, but two of those wins came vs. sub-division teams (Howard, Texas Southern), one came vs. an added game Sun Belt team (Florida International) and the other was vs. a lower echelon ACC team (Maryland).

Conversely, Pittsburgh already has two wins inside the Big East, and they shit down the powerful Navy running game in another victory. In fact, the Panthers are allowing a miniscule 2.9 yards per rush this season, and Rutgers is a team that runs first to set up the pass. The Knights have averaged 4.4 yards per carry vs. their cream puff schedule, but they appear to be in for a rude awakening tonight.

Finally, there is also a matter of revenge, as Rutgers has won this matchup each of the last four years. The thing is, Rutgers was the much better team over this time, and now the roles are reversed and it is Pittsburgh that has stood up vs. much stiffer competition.

Look for the Panthers to get their quadruple revenge in emphatic fashion tonight.

UNDER 8.5 New York Yankees vs. Los Angeles Angels:
Game 1 of the American League Championship Series takes place in the Bronx, and this one should be a doozy. Two terrific starters, two great offenses, which will prevail.

We’re going with the under the 8.5 for a few reasons, first being the weather. It’s expected to be very unpleasant in New York City all weekend, and tonight should be no exception. John Lackey (11-8, 3.83) was brilliant in his first playoff start last week against the Red Sox. He went 7 1/3 innings, and did not allow a run.

CC Sabathia (19-8, 3.37) was acquired by the Yankees to pitch in games like this. He was great last week against Minnesota, allowing 1 earned run in 6 2/3 in a Yankee win last week. This should be a classic pitching matchup between the two best teams in the American League. Good luck!

The Rams are certainly not a very good and are arguably the worst team in the NFL right now. But how can Jacksonville be laying close to double-digits after getting absolutely annihilated last week in Seattle? Some will argue that this is the perfect bounce back position but I think it is just the opposite. If anything, it gives the Rams more confidence as they have nothing to lose at this point and feel they can hang with a team that just got their doors busted in. St. Louis lost last week at home against the Vikings by 28 points but it actually outgained Minnesota by 23 yards as it racked up 400 yards of total offense. Turnovers were the difference as the Rams gave it up three times inside the 10-yard line while also giving up a 48-yard fumble return for a touchdown. St. Louis is getting outscored by an average of 22.4 ppg on the season as the offense has had trouble scoring and the defense has had just the opposite effect on the opposition. To the Rams credit they have played the 6th toughest schedule in the NFL as three of their five games have come against teams ranked within the top half of the league. As for the Jaguars, it looked as though they had turned their season around with back-to-back wins over Houston and Tennessee but they took a big step backward last Sunday. After combining for 68 points in those two victories, they were able to get nothing against the Seahawks while mustering only 199 yards of offense. The offense is ranked middle of the pack but it has been hit or miss and even though the Rams are allowing a ton of points, the defense is ranked 23rd in the league which is actually better than the Sunday opponent. Jacksonville is 30th in the NFL in total defense, allowing 380.6 ypg and 25.4 ppg which is 24th in the NFL. If there is a defense that can get a struggling offense going, this could be the one. Marc Bulger will be getting the start this week at quarterback for the Rams. He ended the game last week by going 7-7 for 88 yards and a touchdown and while that was against a defense that had letup, it is still a great confidence booster. Even adding more confidence is playing against a defense that was rung up for 41 points last week. The Jaguars are just 1-8 ATS as a favorite over the last two seasons including going 0-6 ATS as a home favorite. The Rams fall into a solid contrarian situation. Play on road underdogs of 3.5 to 10 points that are getting outscored by opponents by seven or more ppg, after scoring seven points or less in the first half in two straight games. This situation is 90-48 ATS (65.2 percent) since 1983.Also, play against home favorites of 3.5 to 10 points after a loss by 10 or more points going up against an opponent after trailing in their previous game by 14 or more points at the half. This situation is 45-16 ATS (73.8 percent since 1983. Both of these situations go all the way back to 1983 which makes them even more solid. Expect a closer than expected game in Jacksonville on Sunday. 3* St. Louis Rams
