NCAA Basketball: Fairfield vs. Hofstra Betting Odds & Pick: November 30th 2009

Fairfield vs. Hofstra
Free NCAA Pick: Fairfield +7
Visit Touthouse.com for more NCAA basketball picks from Ted Sevransky

By the end of the ’08-’09 season, Fairfield was an injury riddled mess, yet they still finished with a winning record, earning their first trip to the MACC semifinals in the three year tenure of head coach Ed Cooley. This year, a healthy Stags squad has won four out of five to open up the season, their lone loss coming at Maryland.

Fairfield has won back-2-back games on the road by double digit margins, beating American U by 16 and Howard by 21; corresponding with the return of leading scorer Yorel Hawkins (17 points per game) to the lineup. Anthony Johnson and Shimeek Johnson provide low post muscle and super frosh point guard Derek Needham has proven to be a capable distributor in early season play.

The Stags hung tough against Hofstra last year, a five point game. The Pride just lost at home to Charlotte as 3.5 point favorites, and they failed to cover the number as eight point home chalk against Yale. As a team, Hofstra is shooting just 40% from the floor; a woeful 25% from three point range; not atypical of teams that lack any sort of dominant low post presence. Expect the Stags and the Pride to be in a real dogfight tonight, the SU winner not determined until the final minute of the game. (#517) 2* Take Fairfield.

2009-2010 LSU College Basketball Predictions

2009-2010 college basketball predictions2009-2010 LSU Predictions
2008-09 Record: (27-8, 13-3 SEC West)
Coach: Trent Johnson (2nd year, 27-8 at LSU)
Assistants: Donny Guerinoni, Keith Richard, Brent Scott
Ret.Starters/Lost: 2/3

Overview: Trent Johnson did a great job last year, taking the Tigers to a 27-8 record. This year, he loses star guard Marcus Thornton (21.1ppg, 5.5rpg), and two other key starters (Garrett Temple and Chris Johnson). Thornton is a huge loss to the Tigers, which leaves junior Bo Spencer (6-1, 185) to carry the load. Spencer averaged 11.4ppg last season and will have to run the point and produce offensively. That’s asking a lot for the talented junior who had offseason surgery on his shooting wrist. The rest of the backcourt is a major question mark. Freshman Aaron Dotson (6-4, 180), sophomore Chris Bass (6-0, 180) and Chris Beattie will all have a chance to contribute in the backcourt. The Tigers are in better shape up front led by senior Tasmin Mitchell (6-7, 235), a smart player, who averaged 16.3ppg and 7.2rpg last season. Sophomore Storm Warren (6-7,220) is a talented player who plays hard and should really shine this season. They lack size up front, though 6-10 freshman Dennis Harris, who is just 195 pounds. Provides some length.

Outlook: LSU will take a major fall this year without three key starters. This is where coaching and recruiting come into place because expectations will be low this year.

2009-2010 Arkansas College Basketball Predictions

2009-2010 college basketball predictions2009-2010 Arkansas Predictions
2008-09 Record: (14-16, 2-14 SEC West)
Coach: John Pelphrey (3rd year, 37-28 at Arkansas)
Assistants: Rob Evans, Tom Ostrom, Isaac Brown
Ret. Starters/Lost: 5/0

Overview: Arkansas returns all five starters from a 14-16 team, though that’s not the best thing in the world. The key was the return of senior forward Michael Washington (6-9, 230), who decided to wait one more season instead of bolting to the NBA. Last year, he averaged 15.5ppg and 9.8rpg. Forward Michael Sanchez (6-8, 236) returns as a solid post presence who averaged 5.9ppg and 4.9rpg. He’s been bothered early on by plantar fascitis, a foot ailment. Freshman Marshawn Powell (6-7, 220) will see more time early due to the injury. Another tough issue facing the Razorbacks is the suspension of sophomore Courtney Fortson (14.8ppg, 5.9apg), the starting point guard last season. Freshman Julysses Nobles (6-1, 170) is a late signee, who has had to step up and has done a very good job. The best player may be sophomore Rotnei Clarke (6-0, 184), a dangerous shooter despite his size, who averaged 12.2ppg last year. Wing Jemal Farmer (6-5, 213) is another talented newcomer and JC transfer who is a big-time three-point shooter, who will contribute right away.

Outlook: There are a lot of issues on this team already, though bringing back Washington should help. They just need to mesh the newcomers with the veterans and hope that Fortson returns to the team.

2009-2010 Auburn College Basketball Predictions

2008-09 Record: (24-12, 10-6 SEC Wet)
Coach: Jeff Lebo (6th year, 81-76 at Auburn)
Assistants: Ken Potosnak, Dave Lebo, Bryan Bartley
Ret. Starters/Lost: 2/3

Overview: Jeff Lebo loses three starters from a 24-win team with the biggest loss being forward Korvotney Barber (12.8ppg, 9.6rpg). The Tigers do return senior guard DeWayne Reed (6-1, 175), a scoring point guard, who averaged 13.2ppg and 3.7apg last season. He’ll be joined by another senior in Tay Waller (6-2, 180), who averaged 12.1ppg last season and is an outstanding three-point shooter. However, he’s been bothered by a quad injury early on this season. Sophomore guard Frankie Sullivan (6-1, 185) helped fill the void last season 7.6ppg) as a freshman and has stepped up early in the season. Freshman wing Earnest Ross (6-5, 215) is another potential big-time scorer in the backcourt. Up front, Lucas Hargrove (6-6, 205) is a gritty senior, who averaged 89.1ppg and 5.3rpg last season, but he’s not Barber. Brendon Knox (6-10, 220) is a big senior, who finally gets increased minutes and needs to produce. Sophomore Kenny Gabriel (6-8, 200), a JC transfer who enrolled in May, adds depth to the frontcourt.

Outlook: This looks like a decent, but not great team on paper that Lebo will need to be coached up. The biggest concern is up front where they will need to replace Barber’s ability to rebound.

2009-2010 Alabama College Basketball Predictions

2009-2010 college basketball predictions2009-2010 Alabama Predictions
2008-09 Record: (18-14, 7-9 SEC West)
Coach: Anthony Grant (1st year)
Assistants: John Brannen, Dan Hipsher, Antoine Pettway
Ret. Starters/Lost: 4/1

Overview: Alabama is in rebuilding mode after firing Mark Gottfried and going with former VCU head coach Anthony Grant. The Crimson Tide did finish 18-14 overall last season, but just 7-9 in the league. They have to replace top scorer Alonzo Gee (15ppg, 7.2rpg), who was as tough as they come for a wing player. The backcourt is anchored by senior point guard Mikhail Torrance (6-5, 210), who averaged 10ppg last season. Anthony Brock (5-9, 165) can also play the point, but is a very solid shooter (5.6ppg). Junior Senario Hillman (6-1, 192) is a great athlete, who averaged 12.9ppg last season, but is a two-guard in a point’s body. Up front, Grant was fortunate that sophomore JaMychal Green (6-9, 220) returned after a strong freshman season. He averaged 10.3ppg and 7.6rpg and is a very talented shotblocker. Junior Justin Knox (6-9, 240) added 5.7ppg and 5.1rpg last year. Freshman Tony Mithcell (6-6, 185) is a talented wing player who could fill Gee’s spot at small forward, though he lacks his strength. Freshman guard Charvez Davis (6-3, 180) is an outstanding three-pint shooter, and JC transfer who should help off the bench.

Outlook: Alabama is at least a year away from competing when Grant gets his own players. Right now, they will have to learn how to defend 40 minutes, like his teams at VCU did.

2009-2010 college basketball predictions2009-2010 Mississippi Predictions
2008-09 Record: (16-15, 7-9 SEC West)

Assistants: Michael White, Owne Miller, Torrey Ward
Ret. Starters/Lost: 3/2

Overview: The Rebels lose guard David Huertas (18.1ppg) and big man Malcolm White (7.2ppg, 5.7rgp), who transferred to LSU, but even with those players, they were unable to make the NCAA Tournament and have not made it since 2002. The key in the backcourt is junior guard Chris Warren (5-10, 165), who led the team in scoring last year at 19.6ppg before tearing knee ligaments in Game 11. Junior Eniel Polynice (6-5, 225), who averaged 10.7ppg and 5.3rpg in 2007-08, also returns after missing all but one game last season due to a leg injury. Throw in sophomore guard Trevor Gaskins (6-2,204), who averaged 5.9ppg in 2007-08, and never played last season due to a knee injury, and you have three experienced players, who couldn’t contribute last season due to injury. They should blend in well with holdover guard Terrico White (6-5, 211), who was the conference’s Freshman of the Year, after averaging 13.7ppg last season. Up front, the Rebels have major question marks. Sophomore Murphy Holloway (6-7, 225) was the most solid returning player with 8.4ppg and 6.6rpg last season. Senior DeAundre Cranston (6-9, 251) is a bruiser who can rebound and defend. There’s a lot of expectations for freshman Reginald Buckner (6-8, 210), who was Mr. Basketball in Memphis last year.

Outlook: Andy Kennedy suffered through a tough third season, but if the guards he has returning from injury can stay healthy, this team has a chance of making it back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in eight years.

Overview: The Bulldogs return all five starters from a 23-13 team that finished just 9-7 in the SEC. This is a team loaded with size and athletes. They will go as far as their backcourt takes them. Sophomore De Boston (6-2, 170) seemed to solidify the point guard spot last season, averaging 10.9ppg and 4.3apg. He has great poise and has outstanding potential. Senior guard Barry Stewart (6-2, 170) is an intelligent player who knocked down 72 3-pointers last year and averaged 12.4ppg. Junior wing Ravern Johnson (6-7, 175) added 12.1ppg and is the best three-point shooter on the team with 83 makes. Junior guard Phil Turner (6-3, 170) is a battler who averaged 8.5ppg and 5.5rpg off the bench. Up front, MSU returns senior shotblocker Jarvis Varnado (6-9, 210), who nearly went to the NBA, but returned to college. Last year, he was the SEC Defensive Player of the Year with 394 blocks, just 19 shy of Shaquille O’Neal’s conference Mark and 142 from the NCAA record. He also added 12.9ppg and 8.8 rebounds, while adding significant size to his slender frame. Junior Kodi Augustus (6-8, 220) is back as well, but needs to continue to improve his numbers (6.2ppg, 3.4rpg). Sophomore Romero Osby (6-8, 230) adds more size and athletic ability at the wing or power forward spot.

Outlook: Mississippi State has the talent, size and enough depth to compete with anybody. They may be just a tad off of Kentucky and Tennessee, but in the West, they are the favorites.
