Rice went 10-3 in 2008 and then fell to 2-10 and 4-8 in the last two seasons. At least they won their last two games to give the Owls some hope in 2011. Soph. QB Taylor McHargue (6-1, 205) is back after missing eight games with a shoulder injury. He threw for 491 yds with 6 TDs and 1 pick while rushing for 151 yds. He gives the team a dual-threat qb, while senior Nick Fnuzzi (1681yds, 11 TDs, 9 picks) is more of a pocket passer. They’ll have a new off. coordinator as John Reagan takes over. They’ll have RB Sam McGuffie (6-0, 200) back after rushing for 883 yds with 6 TDs coming over as a Michigan transfer. Now they need to find a wide receiver who can stretch thee field. They have a pretty good tight end in Luke Wilson (33 for 425 yds) but when he’s your leading receiver, that’s not good news for the offense. On defense, Rice has eight starters back including leading tackler S Corey Frazier (83tckls). Rice has to make more plays up front as they were last in the league in tackles for loss last year. They also have to improve against the big play as they gave up 40 deep ball in 2010. The non-conf. schedule includes Texas, Northwestern and Baylor on the road with Purdue at home. They also have to face Houston and Southern Miss on the road in conference. That’s brutal.
