Alabama returns 7 starters on offense but loses QB Greg McElroy (2987, 20, 5), a great manager of the game and leader. Nick Saban’s squad will look towards soph. A.J. McCarron (6-4, 205) or freshman Phillip Sims (6-2, 217) to take over. At running back, they lose Mark Ingram (875yds, 13 TDs), but Trent Richardson (5-11, 224) is capable of producing a huge year with 200+ carries (700yds last year in 112). At WR, they lose Julio Jones (78 for 1133) but return the next two receivers. The offensive line should be solid though there is some concern at left tackle. On defense, Alabama returns 10 starters to a unit that was down last year. At least for their standards. They do lose DT Marcel Dareus (4.5 scks, 6.5 TFLs) but return everybody else including senior LB Courtney Upshaw (6-2, 265), who had 7 sacks last year and is finally healthy. The LB corps is top-notch while the secondary should be improved. Senior SS Mark Barron (6-2, 218) led the Tide last year with 75 stops. The corners are huge and talented. The non-conf. schedule features Kent State, North Texas and Georgia Southern (FCS) at home with Penn State on the road. They also take on LSU at home with Auburn and Florida on the road.

LSU returns 15 starters from an 11-2 football team. Though Alabama is the favorite in the SEC West, LSU will be their biggest hurdle. The TIgers are led by senior QB Jordan Jefferson (6-5,2 24), who threw for 1,411 yds last year with only 7 TDs and 10 picks. He did run for 450yds and 7 TDs. LSU will go as far as Jefferson can take them under new OC Steve Krag. If he struggles early, soph Zach Mettenberger (6-5, 250), who played one year of juco ball and has a huge arm, or senior Jarrett Lee (6-2, 207) could be factors. They lose RB Stevan Ridley (1147yds, 15TDs) but LSU always seems to have an array of backs. Soph. Spencer Ware (5-11, 225) is a baseball player who had a great spring. At WR, they return four of the top five wideouts including junior Reuben Randle (6-4, 207). The O-line struggled with injuries last year and now they lose just one starter. They should be very good this year. The defense loses All-American CB Patrick Peterson (4 picks), AA DT Drake Nevis and MLB Kelvin Sheppard (116tckls). They do return some great talent in WLB Ryan Baker (6-0, 227), who had 7 sacks and 87 tackles last year. The D-line has to replace both tackles though DE Sam Montgomery (6-4, 245) is back after missing last year with an knee injury. The secondary loses Peterson but returns CB Morris Claiborne (6-0, 177), who had 37 tackles and 5 picks as a sophomore. The non-conf. schedule features Oregon from Arlington, Texas, Northwestern State (FCS) and Western Kentucky at home with West Virginia on the road. They take on Alabama on the road with Florida and Auburn coming at home. Tough.

Arkansas returns 13 starters from an exciting team that loses starting QB Ryan Mallett (3869yds, 32, 12) but retains head coach Bobby Petrino’s offense. That offense will at least have Tyler Wilson (6-3, 215) running it. Wilson threw for 332 yds last year and four TDs in around 3 quarters last year when Mallett was injured against Auburn. So he has some experience. Junior TB Knile Davis (6-0, 230) also returns (1,362yds, 13 TDs) as an All-SEC player who will have more of load to carry this year. The top four WR targets are back including senior Joe Adams (50 for 813yds). A bigger problem is on the O-line with just two starters back. On defense, they moved CB Eric Bennett to safety and soph. Jerry Mitchell from safety to corner. There are still concerns there with two starters back. The D-line should be a strength wih three of four starters back including DE Jake Bequette (6-5, 271), who had 7 sacks last year. The LBs should be a strength with senior All-SEC MLB Jerry Franklin (6-1, 245) back as the leading tackler (100, 6.5 scks). The non-conf. schedule features Missouri State, New Mexico and Troy at home with Texas A&M at Arlington. The conf. schedule is tough with LSU and Alabama on the road.

The Bulldogs return 16 starters from a 9-4 team (3-5 conference). They certainly made strides under coach Dan Mullen though the Bulldogs now need to establish themselves in the SEC. QB Chris Relf (6-4, 245) is back after tossing for 1789 yds with 13 TDs and just 6 picks. He also ran for 713 yds but they are going to need mopre production from the passin game. Senior RB Vick Ballard (5-11, 215) returns as well (968yds, 19TDs) as does junior Chris Smith (713yds). Relf’s top target is also back in junior wideout Chad Bumphis (44 for 634yds). The O-line has some concerns with three starters and senior Quentin Saulsberry going from right guard to center. The defense surrendered 237.8ypg in the air last year. At least they return both junior corners in Johnathan Banks and Corey Broomfield, who had 3 picks apiece last year. The defensive front loses All-SEC DE Pernell McGee but return the other three linemen. The LB corps loses all three starters though senior Brandon Mayo (6-2, 235), a transfer from Clemson, should help alleviate some of the losses. The non-conf. schedule features Memphis and UAB on the road with Louisiana Tech and Tenn.-Martin (FCS) at home. The conf. schedule offers Alabama and LSU at home with Georgia and Arkansas on the road.

Was it worth it? Auburn won a BCS Title so losing most of their team and going through the Cam Newton fallout was worth it. Newton was the offense last year, putting up 4,327 total yds and 50 combined TDs. Junior Barrett Trotter (6-2, 206) and soph. Clint Moseley (6-3, 223) are still competing for the starting qb job. At RB, soph Michael Dyer (5-9, 206) will have to carry the offense. He ran for 1,093yds last year. However, with just one returning starter on the offensive line, the holes might not be there. The top WR returning is Emery Blake, who had 33 receptions for 554 yds last year. On defense, they lose All-American DT Nick Fairley (24 TFLs). Soph. Ken Carter (6-5, 287) takes his place. The top LB returning is Darren Bates (5-11, 201) , who had 48 tackles and 7 qb hurries. But they lose six of the first seven tacklers from last year. In the secondary, senior FS Neiko Thorpe (6-2, 185) is back and is the top returning tackler with 64 and 9 pass breakups. The non-conf. schedule includes Utah State, Fla Atlantic and Samford (FCS) at home with Clemson on the road. The conf. schedule features Auburn and Alabama at home with LSU, Arkansas and South Carolina on the road. Ouch.

Ole Miss returns nine starters on offense, but just four starters on defense from a 4-8 team. Houston Nutt enters his fourth year and the seat is starting to get warm. His qb this year is expected to be junior Randall Mackey (5-11, 195), a juco transfer who runs a 4.4. Jeremiah Masoli (2039, 14, 13) has graduated and backup Nathan Stanley transferred. At least senior TB Brandon Bolden (5-11, 221) returns after rushing for 976yds and 14 TDs (6ypc). The O-line returns all five starters and three of the first four receivers are back. So everything appears to be in place save an experienced qb. On defense, Ole Miss has to replace All-SEC nose tackle Jerrell Powe and DT Ted Laurent. They also lose OLB D.T. Shackleford (48tckles, 5 scks), who tore his ACL in the spring. The pass defense allowed 246.3ypg in the air last year. Nutt brought in a new secondary coach in Keith Burns (Kansas State). FS Damien Jackson (6-2, 210) is back as the team’s leading returning tackler with 68 and had four pass breakups. The non-conf- schedule features BYU, Southern Illinois (FCS) and Louisiana Tech at home with Fresno State on the road. They also have Alabama, Georgia and LSU at home, which is good.

South Carolina returns 13 starters including star RB Mracus Lattimore (6-0,2 31), the National Freshman of the Year in 2010. He ran for 1,197 yds with 17 TDs (4.8ypc). The issue is at qb where senior Stephen Garcia (6-2, 230) was suspended during the spring for the fifth time. Even if Garcia returns, it doesn’t exactly send the right message. He threw for 3,059yds last year with 20 TDs and 14 picks. The reason he may return? He’s the best option to throw to junior Alshon Jeffery (6-4, 233), who caught 88 passes for 1,517yds (17.2ypc) and 9 TDs last year. The O-line returns three starters. True freshman Brandon Shell (6-6, 316) could be in the picture if he recovers from offseason shoulder surgery. The defense returns six starters up front and adds the nation’s top recruit in DE Jadeveon Clowney (6-6, 245), who could start right away. They also bring in freshman DT Kelcy Quarles (6-3, 271), who did not qualify last year. Junior CB Stephon Gilmore (6-1, 194) might be the best player on the unit. Last year, he led the team in tackles with 789, adding 3 picks. Senior LB Antonio Allen (6-2, 208) returns to the Spur position. He recorded 70 tackles and 2.5 sacks with 4 pass breakups in 2010. The non-conf. schedule features East Carolina from Charlotte along with Navy and The Citadel (FCS) at home. They miss out on Alabama and LSU but face Florida at home and Georgia on the road.
