Week 17 NFL Pick: New England Patriots -10.5
I won with the Bills last week. They figure to be in over their heads here though. Last week’s game was at home vs. Denver. Now, they’re playing at Gillette Stadium, where they’ve never won. (The Bills are 0-9 all-time here and have lost 10 straight road games in the series.) The Patriots still have something to play for; they’re still looking to secure the #1 seed in the AFC. They also have “payback” on their minds, as the Bills beat them early in the season. Brady had this to say about that setback: “I think everyone still has a pretty bitter taste in our mouths from the last time we lost to the Buffalo Bills. It was an incredibly difficult loss for our team. Everyone is going to be excited to go out there and see if we can do a better job.” Note that the Pats are 50-30-4 ATS the last 84 times that they attempted to avenge an earlier loss, 5-2-1 ATS their last eight in that role. The Bills are seriously banged-up. They accomplished what they wanted last week; winning their home finale. They should be ripe to get blown out here. Note that Buffalo’s most recent road game resulted in a 37-10 loss. The Pats have something to prove. We know the offense should score but I also expect them to be determined to improve their defensive play. Last year, the teams played a close game in December. Yet, when they met after Christmas, the Pats won 34-3. That was in Week 16. The Pats followed it up with a 38-7 victory (vs Miami) in Week 17. Illinois vs. Purdue
College Basketball Pick: Purdue -7 (December 31st 2011)

Illinois started the season 10-0 but it has lost two of its last four games and I think the real Illini team is coming to the forefront. A win over Gonzaga was definitely a good one but it was a good situation as Illinois was catching the Bulldogs in their first road game of the season. The Illini did defeat Maryland in its only true road game this season but the Terrapins will be battling Boston College as the worst team in the ACC. A loss against Missouri by four points was a quality loss but that was on a neutral floor in St. Louis.

Purdue finished 26-8 last season but was bumped in the second round of the NCAA Tournament by VCU. It was a tough ending in the careers of JaJuan Johnson and E’Twaun Moore and their presence we knew would be missed but this team is still pretty loaded. Forward Robbie Hummel returned to the lineup following a second ACL injury on his right knee and he has been awesome, averaging 17.4 ppg and 6.3 rpg. The backcourt is loaded led by point guard Lewis Jackson.

Purdue does have three losses this season but all three came on a neutral floor against two solid teams in Alabama and Xavier and a rival in Butler thanks to a big comeback by the Bulldogs. The Boilermakers are a perfect 8-0 at home and they have won 25 straight games at Mackey Arena which is the fifth longest winning home court streak in the country. This is the first true home test of the season for Purdue but it is a game it should pass with flying colors.

Taking care of the ball has been a staple for Matt Painters teams and this year is no exception. The Boilermakers are averaging just 9.5 tpg, and have five games on the season in which they’ve committed seven turnovers of fewer. Purdue is +5.6 in turnover margin this season and its 1.53 assist/turnover ratio is ninth best in the country. Purdue has won but not covered the last two home meetings with Illinois but this is the lowest line of the three and the Boilermakers should cruise to victory here. 3* (582) Purdue Boilermakers. Dallas Mavericks vs. Oklahoma City Thunder

The Dallas Mavericks have opened with a brutal schedule, and they clearly haven’t been up to the challenge. It appears it’s going to take a while for this team to get over their championship from last season. Players from that title team clearly aren’t motivated in the early going.

Miami got their revenge with a 105-94 victory over Dallas in the opener, which was a bigger blowout than the final score would indicate. The Denver Nuggets also crushed the Mavericks 93-115 in their following game. Now, it’s Oklahoma City’s time for revenge.

The Thunder are going to be highly motivated heading into this one after losing to Dallas in the Western Conference Finals last year. This team already appears to be on a mission after opening the season 3-0, including a 98-95 road victory over Memphis last night.
