Are the Cowboys Super Bowl Bound this year?
If you ask that question anywhere near the city of Dallas, the answer would most definitely be “yes.” Ask that question near Lambeau Field and you likely will get a different answer right now. But if we look into the history of the franchise itself, perhaps that will give us some more insight to better answer that question, specifically draft day.
The Cowboys were the “Team of the 90s” having won 3 Super Bowls in 4 years and they made it to the NFC Championship game the year they didn’t win it all. The 1st title came in 1992 but we have to go back 5 years to April 1988 to see how the dynasty was built. The Cowboys added the 1st piece of their puzzle by drafting WR Michael Irvin that year. They also drafted LB Ken Norton Jr. in the 2nd round too. The following year they drafted QB Troy Aikman 1st overall followed by FB Daryl “Moose” Johnston in the next round. That was a pretty good day for the franchise.
In 1990 the grabbed Emmitt Smith who only went on to become the all-time leading rusher in NFL history. 1991 was arguably their best draft as they snagged DL Russell Maryland and WR Alvin Harper in the 1st round, OL Erik Williams in the 3rd, DT Leon Lett in the 7th round and if that wasn’t enough they drafted future Super Bowl MVP CB Larry Brown in the 12th and final round! 1992 isn’t to be outdone either with guys like CB Kevin Smith, LB Robert Jones and S Darren Woodsen being drafted by the ‘boys.
Let’s fast forward to today’s version of “America’s Team” to see how it was put together, shall we? In 2002, 5 years ago, they took safety Roy Williams in the 1st round. Julius Jones was a 2nd round pick and Patrick Crayton was a 7th round pick-up in 2004. And 2005 is not to be outdone either was Demarcus Ware, Marcus Spears and Marion Barber being drafted. In case you were wondering why nothing was mentioned about the 2003 draft, it’s because they didn’t have a very good draft that year. They only drafted Terrence Newman and Jason Witten that year. To make up for their poor drafting they went out and signed an un-drafted QB out of Eastern Illinois that year; some guy named Romo.
So getting back to the original question “Are the Cowboys Super Bowl bound this year?” well, only time will tell I guess. But if you believe that history repeats itself, you gotta like their chances. Don’t you?
