We feel that Paul Maholm of the Pittsburgh Pirates is one of the more underrated pitchers in the league, while Adam Wainwright of the St. Louis Cardinals has a history of fast starts, so we expect a low scoring game when these teams square off today.

Maholm finished at just 9-9 last year, but keep in mind that he did not get much runs support from a weak Pirates lineup. He would have fared much better with any support, given his 3.71 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in 31 starts. Maholm has also had success vs. the Cardinals, allowing a total of seven earned runs in three starts against them last season and posting seven Quality Starts in his eight career outings against them, all in the last three years.

Wainwright has traditionally been a fast starter, posting a nice 3.73 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in 18 career April appearances while limiting the opposition to a .247 batting average. He had a great April last season, with a 2.79 ERA and a terrific 1.01 WHIP in five April starts covering 38.2 innings, and with pitchers being creatures of habit, we see no evidence why he should not stat out well again this season.

Granted, the Over is 9-3-1 in the last 13 meetings between these teams, but this pitching matchup suggests a break in that pattern.
