The Atlanta Hawks are going under the radar this season due to trading Joe Johnson. This team still has a lot of talent, and it even beat Oklahoma City on the road 104-95 as a 9-point underdog last time out on Sunday without its best player in Josh Smith.

With four days’ rest since he last played, Smith has had some time to let his injured ankle heal. He was a limited participant in practice Tuesday and is listed as questionable. I’ll be siding with the Hawks whether or not Smith plays in this one.

A big reason why I’m fading the Pacers is because they will be playing their 5th game in eight nights, while the Hawks come in on two days’ rest and playing only their 3rd game in six nights.

Indiana is without its best player in Danny Granger. It has struggled offensively with him sidelined. The Pacers are scoring just 91.0 points per game on 40.1 percent shooting while ranking near the bottom of the league in both categories.

Atlanta simply owns this series with Indiana. The Hawks have won nine straight home meetings with the Pacers with their last loss coming back in 2006. The favorite is 17-4 ATS in the last 21 meetings. The Hawks are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games playing on 2 days rest. Bet Atlanta Wednesday.

The Orlando Magic took a ton of criticism in the offseason for trading Dwight Howard and not getting back a whole lot in return. This team is out to prove its critics wrong in the early going, and they’re doing a real good job of it.

Orlando has opened 2-0 in convincing fashion. It beat Denver 102-89 in its opener, followed by a 115-94 victory over Phoenix. Everyone is contributing as five players are scoring 12.0 points or more, led by 25.5 from Glen Davis and 22.5 from J.J. Redick.

Chicago is off to a 2-1 start but it has played a very soft schedule in the early going. It had beaten the Kings and Cavaliers before falling at home to the Hornets 82-89 last time out. This team is overvalued and should not be this heavily favored without Derrick Rose.

We just think that the Miami Heat are going to have trouble covering spreads this season. First of all, this is the most public team in the NBA, even ahead of the Lakers, and bookies can basically set any number for this team as chalk and the public will eat it up. The only value on this team, in our opinion, is to play them in marquee matchups where the lines are more manageable. Look at their schedule this season and you can see what we mean. They faced a fair line against the Celtics in their season opener and covered easy. But they faced pretty public lines in their last two, at New York and at home against Denver, and they failed to cover either game. Tonight’s game reminds us a lot of the last game against Denver where the Nuggets looked real bad their previous game (the Suns were blown out at Orlando last time out) but Denver came to play against the Heat and they had a chance to win it at the end. Miami has the biggest bullseye in the league on their collective backs and teams all want to play their best against the Heat and that is why they will have a real mediocre record this season ATS regardless of what their W/L record is. This team will probably coast through much of the regular season before turning it on in the playoffs. The Heat normally have a stretch during the regular season where they pad their ATS stats and cover a lot of lines. We will stay away from going against them during this time. They seem to be “coasting” right now and we think the Suns are a live dog tonight.

San Antonio has won the last nine meetings in this series but that streak could easily be ended tonight. Indiana is off to a 2-1 start despite missing the services of Danny Granger and it should be 3-0 but lost by a point in Charlotte after D.J. Augustin missed a three-pointer at the buzzer. Even with no Granger in the lineup, this is a very solid team still as they are efficient, a great rebounding team and very solid defensively. The Pacers have yet to allow more than 91 points in regulation and a low scoring game here would again be in their favor as well as our favor considering the amount of points we are getting. Indiana falls into a great situation here as we play against home teams that averaged 98 or more ppg last season and are coming off a game where 205 or more points were scored. This situation is 40-14 ATS (74.1 percent) since 1996. Indiana meanwhile is 22-8 ATS in its last 30 games after two straight games outrebounding opponent by 10 or more.
