Final series before the 2009 All-Star Break and today brings great action. A wonderful pitching matchup shapes up in LA as the Angels Jared Weaver and the Yankees Andy Pettitte take the mound against each other. Also, look for another pitchers duel to take place as John Smoltz and the Red Sox go against Gil Meche and the Royals. Two Big name starters will try to keep form as we head into the Mid Summer Classic. Have a profitable day!

The Cubs have underachieved this season and they are better than their .500 record indicates as they have battled numerous injuries, but were still the preseason favorite to win the National League pennant. Chicago is finally getting healthy and they actually stand just one game behind the Cardinals in the loss column entering today. The Cubs also provide value at a rare home underdog price and they have been a much stronger team at home this season with a 25-16 SU mark, compared to just 16-25 on the road. My pitcher performance ratings predict a solid bounce back effort from Chicago’s Rich Harden who is coming off his worst start of the season last Saturday when he allowed 7 runs in just two innings versus Milwaukee. Harden had pitched well in his prior two starts with a 2.19 ERA and 1.459 WHIP and he has a strong 77/32 strikeout/walk ratio in his 13 starts this season. Meanwhile, the Cardinals’ ace Chris Carpenter qualifies in a negative 42% road favorite letdown situation after his easy 10-1 win last Sunday.

Play CUBS (+1.5 run line).

After struggling throughout the month of May to the tune of a 2-2 mark with a 6.32 ERA, lefty John Danks was spectacular throughout the month of June going 2-3 with a 2.91 ERA. He’s coming off another dominating effort against the Kansas City Royals where he tossed 7.1 innings of shutout ball en route to securing his seventh win of the season. The effort increased his scoreless innings streak to 19 1/3rd innings, and he boasts a 1.51 ERA during his L/5 starts. He defeated the Twins in his lone start at home against them this season, and in his career vs. Minny, the lefty is 4-3 with a 5.33 ERA & 1.57 WHIP.

Opposing the recently streaking southpaw will be the Twins Nick Blackburn who enters his 18th start of the year off a masterpiece against the Detroit Tigers. The righty scattered seven hits through nine innings of work, and almost tossed his first shutout; Brandon Inge spoiled it with a two-run shot in the 9th. He’s been lights out at home where he’s a perfect 4-0 with a 2.32 ERA & 1.21 WHIP in seven overall starts; Twins are 6-1 in those outings. He’s 1-1 vs. the Palehose this year, and in eight career starts against the White Sox, Blackburn is 3-4 with a 4.08 ERA & 1.45 WHIP.

While Chicago comes into this one red hot with one of their hottest hurlers on the bump, Blackburn is unbeaten in this venue and the Twins will most definitely come ready to play after getting rolled up and smoked by the Yankees the L/3 days. The Metrodome has always been a house of horrors for the White Sox, 1-9 L/10 visits, and I look for that trend to continue in the first game of this MLB betting series.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Philadelphia Phillies Odds & Picks: July 10th 2009

Zach Duke of the Pittsburgh Pirates has finally regained the fine form he displayed as a rookie this season, while Joe Blanton has been on a nice role for the Philadelphia Phillies, so look to go Under at Citizens Bank Park Friday night.

Duke has been a disappointment the last couple of seasons, but he has matured nicely this season, going 8-7 while pitching for a losing team with a nice 3.20 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 118 innings. He has reeled off five consecutive Quality Starts and owns eight such starts in his last nine outings. Duke is facing a Phillies lineup that is batting a paltry .238 vs. left-handed pitchers here at home over this entire season.

Meanwhile, Blanton has turned things around nicely after a poor starts to this season. He has seven Quality Starts in his last eight appearances, and he allowed only four runs in the lone non-quality effort. He was downright dominant in his only start vs. the Pirates last season, allowing only one hit in seven scoreless innings, and he is catching a Pittsburgh team that has a .219 team batting average over the last 10 games.

Finally, the Under is 19-7-2 in the last 28 Pittsburgh games overall and 6-2 in the last eight Philadelphia games, and based on this matchup, look for both streaks to get extended here.

OVER 8.5 Cincinnati Reds/New York Mets:
The All Star break can’t come soon enough for the Mets or for Reds starter Bronson Arroyo. New York is in the midst of a horrible slump and Arroyo has been downright awful for the past month. Arroyo (8-8, 5.85) is suffering through one of the worst periods of his career, as he is 1-4 with a 8.42 ERA in his last 5 starts. He’s allowed a ridiculous 21 home runs this year in 103 innings pitched. He is 5-2 lifetime against the Mets, but the way he’s been pitching, I wouldn’t expect a great effort right now. Mets rookie Fernando Nieve (3-2, 2.73) started off the season on fire, but has regressed a little in his last two efforts. He’s allowed 7 runs on 17 hits in his last 9 innings pitched. He’ll look to get back on track tonight against a very good Reds offense. We definitely see this one going way over the 8.5 total.

OVER 9.5 Atlanta Braves/Colorado Rockies:
Two hot teams headed into the All Star break look to finish off the first half on a winning note with the Braves visiting Coors Field and the Rockies. Derek Lowe will take on Ubaldo Jimenez in game 2 of the series. Colorado took game 1 last night 7-6. Derek Lowe (7-7, 4.56) is very lucky he pitched so well in April and May, because he has been terrible since then. He’s 0-4 with a 8.61 ERA in his last 5 starts, allowing 43 hits in just 23 innings. I don’t know if he’s simply lost it, or is battling an injury, but he better get it figured out quick if the Braves expect to contend in the second half. Jimenez (6-8, 3.86) has had a very good year and looks to be legit as the Rockies will remain serious wild card contenders in the second half. He’s allowed 10 runs in his last 19 innings of work, including getting roughed up a little in two of his last three starts, so he may benefit from the break as well. Look for a fairly high scoring game tonight at Coors Field.

Baseball Betting: Oakland Athletics vs. Tampa Bay Rays Odds & Picks: July 10th 2009

Oakland Athletics vs. Tampa Bay Rays
Free Pick: Tampa Bay Rays (-160) – Fri July 10th 2009 7:35p
Visit Touthouse.com for more baseball betting picks from Bob Harvey

The key to staying on top in this game is to stay on top of the streaks. Like Tampa Bay’s current eight game winning skein. The Devil Rays are playing their best baseball of the season and everyone is contributing. Offensively the Rays are hitting .301 and outscoring opponents 48-24. The pitching staff is also doing its part posting a 2.97 ERA over their last eight outings. The Rays are 19-3 at home since they lost consecutive home games and rank among the league’s best with an overall home record of 29-13.

Oakland comes in having lost 10 of its last 14 games and will be looking to rookie Vinnie Mazzaro to stop the bleeding. Mazzaro won his first two big league starts but has gone 0-4 since with a 5.28 ERA in five outings.
Tampa Bay will counter with Jeff Niemann who is 7-4 with a 4.14 ERA and is 1-0 against the A’s.

The Athletics have more than held their own this season against the Rays. The two teams split a four-game series in May and the A’s took two out of three from the Devil Rays in April. However Tampa Bay’s offense has improved dramatically since those earlier meetings. The Rays rank in the top in the big leagues in the five major categories. They’re second in runs per game and OPS, fourth in homeruns, fifth in batting average (.272) and are first in stolen bases. On the flip side, Oakland is 23rd in scoring per game, 29th in average and 30th in OPS. That’s what happens when you stock your team with players well past their prime.

Oakland is 16-27 on the ML but in comparison is 42-41 on the RL.

The money line is the play for me tonight and even though it pains me to lay the -160 with Tampa Bay, it’s an investment that should pay a nice return.

Tommy Hunter had a birthday he won’t soon forget his last time out against Tampa Bay. The righty picked up his first career victory in the “Bigs” by limiting the Rays to just three hits and one earned run while throwing 90 pitches through his 5.1 innings of work. He struck out a career high five batters, and 55 of his 90 pitches went for strikes. Since giving up a combined 20 ER’s in his first three starts at this level last season, Hunter has surrendered a total of just six earned runs in his three 2009 starts.

Felix Hernandez put together a phenomenal month of June that saw him earn Pitcher of the Month honors by going 3-0 with a miniscule 0.94 ERA and a K/BB ratio of 35/12. He remained undefeated at Fenway Park his last time out where he earned a no decision by going seven innings and allowing seven hits and three ER’s in the M’s extra inning road win. Strangely, he’s been more hittable in the pitcher friendly Safeco Field where he’s 3-2 with a 3.64 ERA & 1.36 WHIP in seven starts. He’s also had a rough go of it solving the Rangers potent line-up going 4-9 with a 4.35 ERA & 1.33 WHIP in 18 career starts.

Even though this will be Tommy Hunter’s first road start of the season, this line is laughable. The Rangers are on a roll right now and playing with extreme confidence, while the M’s come into this one just having their hearts ripped out. Their bullpens been bad throughout the last week, and that’s not a good sign for Manager Wakamatsu’s club knowing that Texas’ line-up isn’t intimidated by Hernandez’ stuff in the least. Too much value here… back the nice sized division leading road pups in Game 1!!!

Looking at this matchup we are getting two good pitchers in Lannan (6-5 3.45 ERA) vs. Ortiz (3-4 4.11 ERA). I believe that this line is to short even though both pitchers are 18-7 to the under this season. The Over is 4-1 last 5 between the two teams and 9-4-1 to the Over in Houston last 14 games played their. Lannan is by far the best pitcher Washington has on their roster he has been averaged 3 ER in 7 innings pitched so far this year while Ortiz has been inconsistent for Houston. In Ortiz last game he gave up 8 runs in 5.2 innings pitched to the Giants in SF. In Lannan 3 starts career vs. Houston all 3 games have gone Over the posted total with this year pitching 6 innings giving up 4 runs in a rare win for Washington 9-4. Houston games at home this year are only averaging 8 runs a game and Washington is averaging 10 runs a game on the road due to their terrible bullpen and bad defense. This is a rare spot for me to back an over with Houston but I have a good feeling that this game is going to go Over the 8.5 today.

The LA Dodgers starting pitcher Randy Wolf(3-3, 3.49 ERA) has faired very well against the NY Mets in his career garnering a lifetime 11-5 record that includes a 6-1 record at Shea Stadium. I expect for the veteran southpaw to have another quality performance in this spot vs a short handed Mets side that continue to struggle to win games. With the Mets sending out the inconsistent Livan Hernandez, who is 0-3 with a 6.35 ERA in his last three starts to the hill the Dodgers look very much to be strong bets to bring us home the dough in this spot. It must be noted that Dodgers have proved to be a good bounce back team, and are 21-9 L/30 after a negative outing, which happened last night in a 5-4 loss….Play on the LA Dodgers
