Ohio State vs. Michigan State Picks & Odds: March Madness Picks

March 14th, 2008

Ohio State vs. Michigan State
Free NCAA Basketball Pick: Ohio State +4.0 (-110)
Fri March 14 ’08 2:30p

Less than a week ago the Ohio State Buckeyes, a two-point dog, put a 63-54 beat-down on the tournament bound Michigan State Spartans; and unless OSU can repeat Sunday’s upset win, it’s likely to be the Buckeye’s March Madness demise.

While the Spartans are a lock to make the field of 64, their 11th straight NCAA tournament, Ohio State could be the first team since the ’97 Orangemen to not make the Big Dance after reaching the national championship game the previous season.

Barring a Big Ten tournament title, Ohio State needs to defeat the Spartans and garner one more tournament win to earn serious consideration for an at-large berth on Selection Sunday.

Mr. Izzo’s boyz are 6-14 ATS in their last 20 vs. Big Ten and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall. Conversely the Buckeyes love playing on Ivy Friday and are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 Friday games. Ohio State is 4-1 ATS the last five times these two have tipped off and the underdog in this series is 5-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings. Ohio State finds a way to gut out the Friday afternoon Big 10 battle and win their 20th game of the season.

Take the Buckeye’s and the points (4).

Colorado State vs. BYU Picks: 2008 March Madness

March 13th, 2008

COLORADO STATE +18.0 (-110)
Thu March 13 ’08 2:00p
Quarterfinal action of the Mountain West Tournament kicks off this afternoon when the (7-24) Colorado State Rams lock horns with the #1 seed BYU Cougars and its gaudy 25-6 SU mark. BYU will look for its 14th win in 15 games when it faces Colorado State after the Rams found a way to get the job done in their play in game with Wyoming on Wednesday. The Rams hadn’t felt the thrill of victory in 2008 up until they somehow managed to beat Wyoming, 68-63, as 7-point underdogs. The win snapped their 17-game losing streak and allowed this bruised and battered club to notch one conference victory. Their the first team in the conference to go 0-16 in the regular season since the league expanded the regular season schedule to 16 games back in the 2005-06 season.

BYU had itself one heck of a season in the Mountain West this year. The 24th-ranked Cougars (25-6) set a school record for regular-season wins (25) and a conference record for wins in Mountain West play (14), earning the top seed in the league’s tournament for the second straight season. They’ve likely already locked up an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, but they’ll begin seeking their first conference tournament title since 2001.

As for CSU, there’s not much to talk about. Two of their seven wins this season came in games where a line wasn’t even posted, and they lost another non-lined game SU to Panhandle State in OT by a 97-91 final count. This club was ravaged with injuries, but that’s no excuse to lose to one of the funniest names a University could ever hold. CSU didn’t notch a road win in MWC play up until yesterday, but they did go 2-5-1 ATS in their previous eight MWC road games. As for BYU, they went 6-2 SU and 5-2-1 ATS as a visitor this season.

BYU held the upper hand in both of their meetings this season. They upended the Rams by a 92-73 final count at home pushing the 19-point spread, but then made their backers happy when they paid Fort Collins a visit and left with a 79-65 road win and cover. Both games went over the posted ‘total’ as well.

If you’re thinking about grabbing the points with the Rams, be sure to keep an eye out for big man Stuart Creason’s availability. He’s the team’s second leading scorer, but didn’t play a single minute in their win yesterday. He dropped 24 on the Cougars the one time he faced them this season, and allowed the Rams to stay a bit closer than their first meeting.

Arizona State vs. USC Picks: March Madness

March 13th, 2008

Arizona State @ USC u124.5 (-110)
Thu March 13 ’08 3:00p
Like many teams in the Pac 10, the Arizona State Sun Devils have become more of an Under team, and we look for that pattern to continue vs. the USC Trojans in the Pac 10 Tournament this afternoon.

While this is officially considered to be a neutral site at the Staples Center, it is obviously practically a home game for USC. Thus, we look for Arizona State to run their deliberate offense and play keep-away for the most part, which would prevent them from getting involved in an unwanted running game with the Trojans and would also take the crowd out of the game. The Sun Devils took this approach when they played at USC during the regular season, and as a result the teams combined to score just 120 points. Also, since ASU was on the short end of that 67-53 score, we actually think they will shorten this game even more to give themselves the best chance to win.

On the other side, do not forget about the underrated USC defense, as the Trojans allowed just 63.7 points per game on a minuscule 39.3 percent shooting from the floor during the regular year. Sure they would prefer to run more, but they should be content to let Arizona State do their thing, as the Trojans have the confidence that they could make stops once the Sun Devils finally do get into their offense.

The end result should be a similar if not somewhat slower pace than the regular season meeting in Los Angeles, so we do not see this game exceeding 120 points.

Rhode Island @ NC Charlotte o148.5 (-110)
Wed March 12 ’08 8:50p

The festivities on the boardwalk in Atlantic City will come to a conclusion this evening when the (21-10) Rhode island Rams take on the (18-12) Charlotte 49’ers. Rhode island fell flat on its face over the last month of their regular season schedule, and have been tagged the 11 seed because of their efforts, while Charlotte finished up strong to secure the #6 seed. These clubs just met in each teams season finale, and it was the 49’ers that proved to be victorious by going into Rhode Island and securing a 74-64 SU road win and cover as 6-point underdogs.

Rhode Island got off to a tremendous start to their 2007-08 campaign. They won 14 of their first 15 overall and made their backers very happy by going 9-3-1 ATS over that stretch. However, they went 7-9 SU over their next 16 and sent their backers to the poor house after only managing covers in 4 of those 16 contests. The Rams only went 5-6 SU on the road, but they went a perfect 4-0 SU in their neutral court games. In their 15 games away from home, the Rams attained a 6-8-1 mark ATS.

Charlotte closed out their regular season schedule very strong by picking up SU wins and covers in 4 of their L/5. They’ve gotten hot at the right time and need to make a deep run within this tourney to have any shot of punching their “Big Dance” tickets. All in all, the 49’ers went 5-9 SU in their road/neutral venue games , but churned out a respectable 6-7-1 mark ATS. Their win at Rhode Island last week snapped a three game road losing streak, so they should head into this game very confident knowing they just took care of these guys in their own house.

Surprisingly, Rhode Island has been installed the favorite in this contest by 1-point and the ‘total’ has been set at 148. Charlotte holds a 5-1 SU advantage in the all time series against Rhode island that dates back to 1999, but each club has earned three spread victories. The Rams are a woeful 1-7 ATS their L/8 overall games, and an also pathetic 1-6 ATS their L/7 when installed a favorite. Charlotte is 6-1-1 ATS their L/8 as an underdog, but have failed to excel in that role in neutral court games going 2-11-1 ATS their L/14. With each club’s shoddy performance in this scenario, look to the ‘total’ that’s seen the Over go a combined 13-0 in neutral court games where RI was installed as the favorite and a perfect 5-0 ATS in the 49’ers L/5 games as an underdog.

Wyoming -6.5
Wed Mar 12 ’08 2:00p

I don’t lay points very often in conference tournaments, but there are times where the chalk is the clear choice to make. Usually, these are the type of games where the underdog has but one game left in their season – this game. Colorado State is that kind of an underdog. It’s hard for a 6-24 team that went winless in Mountain West play to get excited about their chances. It’s even harder when they have to travel for an early start game here in Vegas, a game that probably won’t have more than a smattering of fans in the Thomas and Mack Arena for the 11 AM local time tip-off.

When we throw in the injury situation for this very bad team it gets even worse for their psyche and their chances of making a stand. Colorado State has a pair of seven footers in Stuart Creason and Ronnie Aguilar, a duo that combines for 16 points and 12 rebounds per game. Neither is expected to play here, suffering from ankle and foot injuries respectively. Wyoming won both regular season meetings by double digit margins. They covered the spread in their Mountain West Conference tournament opener last year by a double digit margin as well. Expect a similar result this time around. (#756) Take Wyoming.

2008 March Madness Betting The NCAA Basketball Tournament

March 11th, 2008

Sports Interaction’s Frank Doyle discusses what Sports Interaction has in store for the NCAA Basketball Tournament

In sports betting terms, if March Madness were a chocolate factory, it would be like Willy Wonka’s. All the delights of the world are there. Super Bowl is technically bigger, but that’s just one night – March Madness is a much more prolonged feast and this year we’re going to make the most of that at Sports Interaction.

This year, Sports Interaction is going to have a wider range of bets than ever before. Obviously, we’ll have all the games, with totals and moneylines and spreads winning margins, but we’ll have so much more. We’ve been crunching numbers into dust to offer these new bets, and we think they’ll be really attractive.

We’ll be offering markets on what Conference will produce the Champion, from what State will the winner come, what will be the winning region, and all manner of cool stuff like that. We’ll also have markets on how the different seeds will do, so you can bet on whether or not a Number 1 seed will win the thing without being tied down to Tennessee, UCLA or whoever. If the Tar Heels or Bruins are actually named as No 1 seeds of course.

It’s something we’re really excited about right now. This week we’re concentrating on the Conference Tourneys of course (and they’re looking really good this year), and then once the teams are named and the brackets are filled we’ll have all those marvellous extra markets up, as well as action on the all the first round games and the outright of course. In college basketball betting terms, coming to Sports Interaction during the tournament will be like finding a Hershey Bar the size of the Washington Monument.

2008 March Madness Bracket Tournament Contests & Pools

March 11th, 2008

2008 MARCH MADNESS BRACKET CONTESTSOnce a simple tournament involving just eight collegiate basketball teams in 1939, March Madness has turned into an obsession for many, thanks to the enormous popularity of wagering on games.

An estimated $2.5 billion is bet on the annual event, and this time around, the most convenient and lucrative place to place wagers will be 5Dimes.com.

This year, 5Dimes.com has decided to add more to The Big Dance by shaking up the way the gaming industry treats March Madness. When players visit 5Dimes.com, they will be pleasantly surprised with a choice of $1 and $5 March Madness pools both with incredible payouts set at 100%.

The bonus offer at 5Dimes.com is one for the books. If a player from the $5 pool correctly chooses all 63 winners in the tournament, they will be awarded with a cool $500,000. Also, if a player from the $1 pool correctly chooses all 63 winners in the tournament, $100,000 will be awarded.

Payouts of 100% and big-time bonuses are not the only reasons to play your brackets at 5Dimes.com. Instead of filling out an old school paper bracket, 5Dimes serves up a simple, state-of-the-art interface where the bracket is on the computer screen. The only thing to do is point and click on selections. Participants will also be able to track their progress throughout the month-long tournament, as well as check out how they rank against other bracket contenders.

Brackets will be available to fill out at 5Dimes following Selection Sunday on March 16, when the NCAA announces the qualifying teams.

In addition, players will also be able to play in daily pools throughout the tournament. Players will be able to log in before the first game of the day to make their selections. These daily pools also offer amazing 100% payouts.

“It’s that time of year again,” said a 5Dimes Spokesperson. “Trash talking and checking scores repeatedly throughout the day will take over your life for a few weeks. But that’s what makes it so much fun.  This year we plan on offering something for every type of bettor – from the 100% payout pools to incredible reduced juice options.”

Throughout the tournament, 5Dimes will also offer its standard array of sports wagering options, including everything from parlays to proposition bets. Wagers on the first- and second-half of games, player versus player matchups and total points will also be part of 5Dimes’ impressive selection of wagers during the tournament. And most of 5Dimes’ NCAA wagers come with less juice, with 10-cent side, 10-cent moneylines and 10-cent totals. The 5Dimes reduced juice applies to NBA, MLB and NHL wagers as well. Reduced juice offerings will be available on the day of each game.

With a shot to win up to $500,000 on your bracket and reduced juice options throughout the tournament, 5Dimes is definitely the place to take your shot at a huge March Madness payoff.
