The Prez 2008 March Madness Picks: Texas vs. Austin Peay

March Madness Picks, Free Sports Picks, NCAA Basketball PicksMarch 20th, 2008

Texas -18.0 (-110)
Fri March 21 ‘08 3:00p

Texas vs. Austin Peay: There is a reason that the Longhorns are the sexy pick to reach the Final Four this April… They play in the strongest conference, the Big 12, and with two terrific early tournament matchups, figure to play the second weekend of games in Houston (home away from home, per se). After destroying Austin Peay today, the talented squad will get the winner of the Miami-St. Mary’s game, after beating either, or both squads combined for that matter, they head to Houston for the regionals.Texas is the strongest No. 2 seed without question, have the best balance backcourt to the paint, and once they reach the Sweet Sixteen and then the Elite Eight, they have a possible two games, still in Texas, at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

First and foremost the team must get over their hard fought and physical defeat to Kansas in the Big 12 Championship game. Peay, who is balanced and offensive minded, can’t matchup with the quicker and more bigger Longhorns, and have as much chance of winning today as you do of hitting the lottery.

The Govs are seriously undersized in the post and must stay out of half court sets on the offensive end of the court; and the strength of their team, their guard play by Derek Wright (11.7 ppg) and Todd Babington (11.6 ppg), is neutralized by D.J. Augustin and A.J. Abrams.

The Longhorns are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 neutral site games as a favorite.

The Friday action play is on Texas minus the points over Peay.\

NIT Tournament Betting Picks: Utah State vs. Illinois State

Free Sports Picks, NCAA Basketball PicksMarch 19th, 2008

Utah State +8.5
Wed Mar 19 ‘08 10:00p

Utah State ranked #1 in the nation in offensive field goal percentage – better than Kansas, better than Georgetown, better than any of the 340 other teams in college basketball. And it’s not even a close race – the Aggies were a percentage point and a half better than the Jayhawks, who ranked second in the nation in this statistical category. Quite simply, this team takes good shots on nearly every possession. Head coach Stew Morrill’s offense is extremely difficult to defend; even tougher for an opponent that hasn’t seen it before and has only a few days to prepare defensively.
Utah State was not a great road team this year by any stretch of the imagination, winning only five of their 13 road contests. But when the Aggies lost on the highway, their good shooting was enough to keep them in the game – a three point loss at San Jose St, a five point loss at Hawaii and a five point loss at Nevada in their last three road defeats. It’s surely worth noting that Utah State won their last two road games of the season by 19 points or more, showing dramatic signs of improvement in hostile environments as the season progressed. But their overall road record gives us solid value here in a game that they won’t need to win in order to cover the pointspread.
Road underdogs went 9-3 ATS on the opening night of the two ‘other’ tournaments (NIT & CBI). Home courts simply don’t mean as much in the lesser tournaments as they did during the regular season. Illinois State is still nursing a minor hangover from their NCAA snub, and, despite their 15-1 home court straight up record, they only finished 7-7 ATS at the Redbird Arena this year. Their 3-6 ATS mark at home down the stretch of the Missouri Valley campaign including an 0-4 ATS mark when laying seven points or more gives us all the confidence we need to fade the Redbirds at home tonight. (#655) Take Utah State.

2008 NIT Tournament Picks: Oklahoma State vs. Southern Illinois

March Madness Picks, Free Sports Picks, NCAA Basketball PicksMarch 18th, 2008

Oklahoma State @ Southern Illinois u122.0 (-110)
Tue Mar 18 ‘08 9:00p
The Southern Illinois Salukis are accustomed to playing low scoring games in the Missouri Valley Conference, while the Oklahoma State Cowboys do not object to a half-court pace either, so points should be at a premium tonight. The Under is 4-1 in the last five Southern Illinois games, with a very low average combined total score of just 115.4 point in those contests. They are playing great defense during this stretch, limiting their opponents to 41.0 percent shooting from the floor, and considering that Oklahoma State is shooting just 40.7 percent from the floor on the road for the entire season, we look for that fine defense to continue.

Now the Salukis are averaging 67.6 points per game offensively at home this season, but we are not convinced they could reach that level vs. a Big 12 opponent here. Southern Illinois’ scoring average drops to 62.2 points when they played out of conference this season, and in three games against the six so-called power conferences, the Salukis scored 45 points vs. USC, 51 vs. Indiana and 63 vs. Mississippi State.

Another effort in the 50s would not surprise us here, so look for a safe Under.

Free Pick: Georgia vs Arkansas o130.0
Sun March 16 ‘08 3:30p

Arkansas and upstart Georgia go head to head in this afternoons SEC championship game, in tornado ravaged Atlanta. Georgia played two games yesterday, for just the 2nd time in the programs history, and will not have much left in the tank to play solid defense here today, against a Arkansas team that can put points on the board in a hurry. I expect the Bulldogs to find themselves, behind early , which will result in having to open up or be blown off the court. With that said ,look for a high scoring slug fest that will easily eclipse the number. Arkansas is 22-10 L/32 on the OVER in road games against conference opponents, with the average score ringing in at 142.2 PPG. Play OVER

Free Pick: Oklahoma vs. Texas u126.5 (-110)
Sat March 15 ‘08 2:00p

Both meetings between the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners were low scoring this season, and that is par for the course for these two teams.

Oklahoma has now gone Under in six consecutive games, and the average combined total score in those contests is just 114.2 points. The Sooners shoot a measly 40.8 percent from the floor when they are away from home, and their offensive problems were evident in yesterday’s 54 -49 win over the Colorado Buffaloes where they shot a miserable 19 out of 58 from the floor (32.8 percent)!

Texas has gone Under in the last two games, and the Under is 5-2 in their last seven games overall. The Longhorns are limiting their opponents to just 39.5 percent shooting for the entire year, and that figure drops to 37.6 percent over the last five games. They have not allowed over 66 points in six of their last seven games.

Finally, the two head-to-head meetings between these schools this season produce just 118 and 107 total points respectively.

Free NCAA Basketball Pick: Illinois vs. Purdue u119.0 (-110)
Fri March 14 ‘08 6:30p

This may seem like a low total at first glance, but the Illinois Fighting Illini are trying to improbably run the table in this tournament, and their best chance of beating the Purdue Boilermakers is to slow this game down to a crawl.

The Illini did go Over in their narrow 64-63 escape vs. Penn State yesterday, but that snapped a string of four consecutive Under for them, and the average combined total score over those four games was just a combined 108.0 points! Not only are the Illini deliberate on offense, but they have been solid defensively this season despite their 14-18 record, limiting their opponents to just 39.6 percent shooting from the floor.

Now naturally, Purdue would like to run all day. However, there is not much the Boilermakers could do if Illinois runs the clock down with every possession. Purdue encountered a couple of other deliberate teams recently in Northwestern and Minnesota, and those games produced 111 and 118 points respectively. Most importantly, Purdue won both of those games, suggesting that they do not terribly mind playing at a slower pace vs. inferior opposition.

That said, Illinois has their work cut out for them to say the least if they hope to pull an upset here. However, at least they will be able to keep this scoring down.

CBB Free Pick: Illinois, Purdue Under 119

Ohio State vs. Michigan State
Free NCAA Basketball Pick: Ohio State +4.0 (-110)
Fri March 14 ‘08 2:30p

Less than a week ago the Ohio State Buckeyes, a two-point dog, put a 63-54 beat-down on the tournament bound Michigan State Spartans; and unless OSU can repeat Sunday’s upset win, it’s likely to be the Buckeye’s March Madness demise.

While the Spartans are a lock to make the field of 64, their 11th straight NCAA tournament, Ohio State could be the first team since the ‘97 Orangemen to not make the Big Dance after reaching the national championship game the previous season.

Barring a Big Ten tournament title, Ohio State needs to defeat the Spartans and garner one more tournament win to earn serious consideration for an at-large berth on Selection Sunday.

Mr. Izzo’s boyz are 6-14 ATS in their last 20 vs. Big Ten and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall. Conversely the Buckeyes love playing on Ivy Friday and are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 Friday games. Ohio State is 4-1 ATS the last five times these two have tipped off and the underdog in this series is 5-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings. Ohio State finds a way to gut out the Friday afternoon Big 10 battle and win their 20th game of the season.

Take the Buckeye’s and the points (4).

Colorado State vs. BYU Picks: 2008 March Madness

March Madness Picks, Free Sports Picks, NCAA Basketball PicksMarch 13th, 2008

COLORADO STATE +18.0 (-110)
Thu March 13 ‘08 2:00p
Quarterfinal action of the Mountain West Tournament kicks off this afternoon when the (7-24) Colorado State Rams lock horns with the #1 seed BYU Cougars and its gaudy 25-6 SU mark. BYU will look for its 14th win in 15 games when it faces Colorado State after the Rams found a way to get the job done in their play in game with Wyoming on Wednesday. The Rams hadn’t felt the thrill of victory in 2008 up until they somehow managed to beat Wyoming, 68-63, as 7-point underdogs. The win snapped their 17-game losing streak and allowed this bruised and battered club to notch one conference victory. Their the first team in the conference to go 0-16 in the regular season since the league expanded the regular season schedule to 16 games back in the 2005-06 season.

BYU had itself one heck of a season in the Mountain West this year. The 24th-ranked Cougars (25-6) set a school record for regular-season wins (25) and a conference record for wins in Mountain West play (14), earning the top seed in the league’s tournament for the second straight season. They’ve likely already locked up an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, but they’ll begin seeking their first conference tournament title since 2001.

As for CSU, there’s not much to talk about. Two of their seven wins this season came in games where a line wasn’t even posted, and they lost another non-lined game SU to Panhandle State in OT by a 97-91 final count. This club was ravaged with injuries, but that’s no excuse to lose to one of the funniest names a University could ever hold. CSU didn’t notch a road win in MWC play up until yesterday, but they did go 2-5-1 ATS in their previous eight MWC road games. As for BYU, they went 6-2 SU and 5-2-1 ATS as a visitor this season.

BYU held the upper hand in both of their meetings this season. They upended the Rams by a 92-73 final count at home pushing the 19-point spread, but then made their backers happy when they paid Fort Collins a visit and left with a 79-65 road win and cover. Both games went over the posted ‘total’ as well.

If you’re thinking about grabbing the points with the Rams, be sure to keep an eye out for big man Stuart Creason’s availability. He’s the team’s second leading scorer, but didn’t play a single minute in their win yesterday. He dropped 24 on the Cougars the one time he faced them this season, and allowed the Rams to stay a bit closer than their first meeting.
