We have to lay a little extra juice to play at 5.5. However, I feel that price will likely prove worth laying.

Both 2012 meetings between these teams stayed below the total, including a 3-0 final for Nashville on this very day (1/19) last season.

Including that result, the Predators have seen the “under” go 30-15-8 in division play the past couple of seasons. Overall, their games averaged 5.3 goals last season.

Note that most of last year’s meetings between these teams had an O/U line of five, rather than 5.5. However, the final meeting (which finished with exactly five goals) had an O/U line of 5.5. Including that result, the Preds have seen the “under” go 19-14 the last 33 times that they played a home game with an O/U line of 5.5.

Don’t be surprised when those stats improve this evening. Take a look at the Under 5.5

Nice start to the NHL playoffs. I’ve gone 2-0 with my premium (guarnateed) plays while also going 2-0 with free plays. After a win with LA over Vancouver Wednesday, I came back with an underdog winner on San Jose over St. Louis yesterday. Today’s complimentary total also offers the chance to get more back than we wagered.

In other words, we’re able to get “plus money” on the “under 6″ for this game. While the first game was indeed high-scoring (4-3 Flyers in OT) I feel that’s providing us with excellent value. With all due respect to these offenses, in my humble opinion, I feel that’s simply too high for a playoff game.

While the Pens have certainly been a high-scoring team, keep in mind that the “under” is stil 4-1-1 when the Flyers have played a road game with an O/U line of six, 13-7-2 their last 22 in that situation.

Four of six regular season meetings produced six or fewer goals. I feel this one has a better chance of finishing with less than six than I do with more than six goals. That being the case, this price provides value. Consider the Under.

NHL Picks: San Jose Sharks vs. Dallas Stars Prediction: April 3rd 2012

NHL Picks: April 3rd 2012
San Jose Sharks vs. Dallas Stars
Prediction: Dallas Stars +102
CLICK HERE FOR TODAY’S EXPERT NHL PICKS

This is the second game of a home-and-home between San Jose and Dallas and the Stars are in need of a win following a shutout loss to the Sharks on Saturday. Both teams are in the midst of a late season playoff push as San Jose has 90 points and it sitting in eighth place in the Western Conference. The Stars are right behind the Sharks with 89 points so obviously this game is going to have a lot of implications in the conference. Dallas is just 3-5 in its last eight games so now is the time.

The Sharks have been great at home with a 25-12-3 record but they are just 15-17-7 on the road and the recent highway play has been a real struggle with an atrocious 3-11-3 record over their last 17 roadies. The Sharks will likely need four points in the final three games to feel secure about making the playoffs but with two games on the road against teams fighting for those playoff spots, it will be extremely tough. San Jose then closes at home against Los Angeles, its second straight game against the Kings to close out.

San Jose’s offense has been nearly non-existent on the road lately as in its last nine games away from home, it has tallied only 16 goals so getting only one win in those games is no surprise. As a matter of fact, the Sharks have not had a lead in a road games since March 13th, a span of over 214 consecutive minutes of trailing. The pressure is definitely on. “I’ve never been in the position we’re in when it was down to the wire,” Dan Boyle said. “Thirteen years now, this is a first for me.”

Dallas knows it is likely now or never as loss knocks the Stars three points behind San Jose. “This game either puts us in the driver’s seat or takes us out of it, so it’s pretty big,’ Dallas head coach Glen Gulutzan said Monday. “We’re still in a position where we have everything in our control. You’ve got to win games to get in and it’s nice to know that if we do, we control our own destiny.” The good news is Dallas is 11-2 in its last 13 games following a loss of three goals or more. 3* (16) Dallas Stars

NHL Picks: Carolina Hurricanes vs. Columbus Blue Jackets: March 23rd 2012

NHL Picks: March 23rd 2012
Carolina Hurricanes vs. Columbus Blue Jackets
Prediction: Columbus +136
CLICK HERE FOR TODAY’S EXPERT NHL PICKS

I like how this one sets up for the home underdog. While they won’t be going to the playoffs, the Hurricanes have actually won four games in a row. However, three of those came against teams which were currently fighting for the the playoffs and/or fighting to improve their playoff positioning. “Getting up” for those meaningful games is generally fairly easy, particularly when the last of those came against division rivals.

Getting up for a game against lowly Columbus, a non-playoff team from the opposite conference, figures to be a little more difficult, potentially more so with a showdown with the Wings at Joe Louis looming on deck tomorrow.

Note that Carolina is only 14-22 (-7.6) against teams with a losing record. Worse, even with Wednesday’s win vs. Florida, the Canes remain a terrible 4-17 (-13.4) when off a divisional game.

Playing at home (and with no game on deck tomorrow) the Blue Jackets should have an easier time getting motivated.

While they were outclassed by Chicago last time out, the Jackets have quietly gone a profitable 7-5 (+4.4) their last dozen games against teams with a losing record. They’re now 25-18 (+10.5) the past couple of years, when facing a losing team during the second half of the season.

It should also be noted that the Jackets are a perfect 4-0 the last four in this series, winning by a combined score of 15-6. Looking for an underdog with a solid shot at an upset? Consider Columbus.

NHL Picks: Vancouver Canucks vs. New Jersey Devils: February 24th 2012

The Canucks are playing very well right now. However, they’re in a tough spot tonight and they’ll be facing another team which is also playing well. Off a huge “shootout” win at Detroit, I expect Vancouver to stumble here.

Last night’s game at Detroit was a very big game. For starters, the Canucks and Red Wings are battling for top spot overall. Also, they may well see each other in the playoffs. Additionally, the Canucks were attempting to end Detroit’s record-breaking 23-game home winning streak.

As Canucks’ goalie Roberto Luongo noted afterwards: “It was an intense game with a playoff atmosphere …”

Vancouver’s Alex Burrows would add: “For us to come in here and play well and show that we can beat them means a lot …”

Note that not only are the Canucks playing the second of back-to-back games here, they’re also playing their third game in four days AND their fifth game in the past seven.

Off such an emotional victory and in such a difficult scheduling spot, a letdown is extremely possible, if not likely. Of course, even if the Canucks are fully focused on the Devils, its not going to be easy to win here.

The Devils, who had the past two days off, have won four straight games. They’re 9-2 since the end of January. They’re also now a profitable 21-9 (+11.1) in the month of February, the past few seasons.

With the Devils also at 12-6 (+5.9) when playing with two day’s rest in between games, lets back the well-rested home team. Consider New Jersey. Get more NHL picks for February 24th 2012 from Ben Burns at Touthouse.com
