OVER 9 Oakland/New York Yankees:
The A’s destroyed the Twins yesterday 16-1, and seem to be finding themselves offensively. They put up a 14 spot on Monday, and seem to finally be breaking out of a season long slump. No place better than to head to the band box that is new Yankee Stadium. Vin Mazzaro (2-6, 4.09) takes the hill for the A’s, and he’s simply been awful his last 5 starts, pitching to an 0-5 record with a 6.48 ERA. He won his first two starts as a major leaguer, but hasn’t gotten the job done since. Okland is not in contention, so they’re willing to take their lumps with young pitching and let them grow at the Major League level. The Yankees send their ace, CC Sabathia (9-6, 3.66) to the mound, but Sabathia is currently in the midst of a good start/bad start trend that has lasted his last 6 or so starts. He pitched 7 shutout innings in his last outing against Detroit last Saturday, so he’s due for a clunker tonight. I don’t expect the A’s to put up 16 runs or anything, but they should be good for 4-5 runs and the Yankees certainly should have no trouble going up against Mazzaro.
