UNDER 8.5 Kansas City Royals/Detroit Tigers:
Good pitching matchup tonight at Comerica Park as Bruce Chen takes on Justin Verlander in the first of a three game set between the Tigers and Royals. Chen has done a really nice job for the Royals in his return to the major leagues. He is 0-2, but the Royals have done him no favors offensively in his two starts. His ERA is 4.38, solid, yet unspectacular. Verlander (8-4, 3.54) was named to the All Star team on Sunday and that honor is well deserved. He’s been the ace of the staff all year and is one of the main reasons the Tigers are likely to be in first place at the All Star break. He struggled a little in June, posting a 2-2 record with a 4.22 ERA. He is 8-1 lifetime vs. Kansas City and we expect more of the same today.

UNDER 8.5 LA Dodgers/New York Mets:
Can’t wait to see this matchup tonight at Citi Field between two really good young pitchers. Clayton Kershaw goes for the Dodgers while Mike Pelfrey takes the hill for the Mets. Kershaw (5-5, 3.49) has been brilliant of late as the Dodgers cruise to the NL West title. In his last 5 starts, the young lefty is 2-1 with a 1.71 ERA. He’s struck out 28 while only allowing 19 hits in that span as well. He’s well on his way to becoming a future ace on that staff. Pelfrey (6-3, 4.26 has done a good job for the struggling Mets as well. New York can simply not score any runs right now, and must rely solely on their pitching until they can get some of their offensive starts back into the lineup. Pelfrey is 2-1 with a very good 3.07 ERA in his last 5 starts. He needs another strong effort tonight because as we mentioned, the Mets are really struggling to score runs right now.
