The defending Super Bowl Champions meet the team with the worst record in the league last season as the Pittsburgh Steelers visit the Detroit Lions.
The Detroit Lions had the chance to celebrate a win a few games back and this year, so far at least they don’t have the worst record in the NFL, as there are still several teams yet to win a game. Unfortunately for the Lions the good news ends there. The Lions followed up their win with a brutal loss on the road to the Chicago Bears where their starting QB, number one draft choice, and future of the franchise, Matt Stafford, was injured and was pounded and dragged around Soldier Field all day long. It was a very typical Lions game where the team played well in the first half and actually competed only to get kicked around and lose badly in the second half. If this is any indication of how their season is going to go, we may have already seen the best from the Lions.
The Pittsburgh Steelers haven’t won on the road yet this season. At 2-2 they are 2-0 at home and 0-2 on the road. The champion Steelers, like the lowly Lions have a similar problem of closing out poorly. Whether it be conditioning or just not having the guns, the Steelers seem to be surrendering leads late or making games more competitive than they need to be. Last week against San Diego the Steelers looked better than they had all season and dominated a very good Charger team. It will be interesting to see what Pittsburgh team shows up. The defense looked it’s best since the season started and will try and carry that momentum over into this game. If the defense can carry ot forward, this will be a long tough day for the Lions.
The trends don’t tell me much as Pittsburgh hasn’t been a good cover team on the road and Lions are a bad cover team at home. It just appears to be one of those situations where something has to give.
I believe the Lions started Matt Stafford this season because they felt he was their best chance to win, now that he is gone their chances by their own admission would have to be worse. This has beat down written all over it as the Steeler fans travel well and may fill Ford Field.
Mitch’s Pick: Pittsburgh Steelers -10 1/2
