Matt’s Free Plays are on a POWERFUL 7-2 run and he adds to that tonight by taking the underdog Padres as they look to shake out of their slump.
The Padres were hammered in Colorado last night to open this three-game series but I expect them to bounce back tonight. It has been a rough run for San Diego as it has dropped five of its last six games but that only adds value to it tonight. The offense should get back on track and the Padres are 9-2 in their last 11 games after scoring two runs or less in their previous game. They turn to Eric Stults who has quietly put together a solid season with a 3.50 ERA and 1.20 WHIP through 24 starts. He has not been nearly as good on the road but facing Colorado has not been an issue as he is 2-0 with a 1.13 ERA and 0.88 WHIP in two starts including allowing one run in seven innings in a win at Coors Field. The Padres are 6-2 in Stults’ last eight starts against teams with a losing record. Colorado has won its first four games of this homestand to move to nine games over .500 at Coors Field. Putting together winning streak has been an issue though as the Rockies are 4-11 in their last 15 games following a win. Jeff Manship gets the call tonight and while this is just his second start of the season, it is only his third start in just under four years so him being a favorite here is a big stretch. He pitched decent in his first start against the Mets this year but it was far from dominant and I do not expect it to get much better here as his 6.06 career ERA shows the overall issue he has had. The Padres are 4-0 in their last four games against starters with a WHIP greater than 1.30. Play (909) San Diego Padres
