Minnesota enters tonight’s game on a nice roll, winners of four straight. That stands in sharp contrast to the Mariners, who have lost on walk-off home runs in the ninth and tenth inning of their last two ballgames, a pair of crushing defeats. Seattle has now lost seven times when leading after six innings after blowing a five run lead last night, a demoralized ballclub. The Twins bring Francisco Liriano to the hill tonight, taking a big step down in class after facing the Yankees or Red Sox in each of his last three starts. Liriano has dominated this lineup throughout the course of his career, with a 3.00 ERA and a .203 batting average against vs. Seattle. The light hitting Mariners have notched only six wins in 16 previous tries against southpaw starters this year, and they managed only three hits against Liriano on his last trip to Safeco Field.

Seattle’s Doug Fister has been a very pleasant surprise for manager Don Wakamatsu, entering the game as the AL ERA leader. Despite that track record, the Mariners are just 2-4 in Fister’s last six starts. And Fister’s inability to miss bats (only 26 strikeouts in 62 innings this year) portends trouble for him as the season progresses.
