As we reach the midway point of the 2010 NFL regular season it is apparent that the AFC has clearly established itself as the dominant conference so far. If you look at most NFL power rankings the NFC does not have a team in the top 5. The New York Giants at 5-2 are probably the best team in their conference but New England at 6-1, followed by Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Baltimore, and New York (Jets), who are all 5-2, would all be ranked ahead of them. There is little doubt that the NFC has the two most disappointing teams with Dallas and Minnesota a combined 3-11 so far.
Turning to the early games this week, the marquee matchup is a NFC South battle for first place between the surprising 5-2 Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the 5-2 Atlanta Falcons. Atlanta is currently favored by eight points at home and the ‘over/under’ line is set at 44 ½. Tampa’s ball-hawking secondary has this team tied for the second best turnover ratio in the league at +8.
The late games features another key divisional battle between two of the other surprising teams in the league. The 5-2 Kansas City Chiefs will try and extend their two-game lead in the AFC West when they take on the second-place Oakland Raiders (4-4). Oakland is currently a 2 ½ point favorite and the ‘over/under’ line is set at 40 1/2. If Kansas City wins this game it will have matched its win total for the last two years combined.
Sunday Night Football features a matchup that looked great on paper before the season began, but in reality did not pan out. The 1-6 Dallas Cowboys travel to Lambeau Field in Green Bay to take on the 5-3 Packers, who are actually leading the NFC North with that record. Green Bay is an eight-point favorite and the ‘over/under’ is set at 45 ½. Journeyman QB John Kitna will be behind center for Dallas, replacing an injured Tony Romo. Packer QB Aaron Rodgers will be without one of his favorite targets; WR Donald Driver, who is out with a leg injury.
Monday Night Football takes us to Paul Brown Stadium for an AFC North division battle between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cincinnati Bengals. The Steelers are a five-point favorite over the 2-5 Bengals and the ‘over/under’ line is set at 41. This game pits Pittsburgh’s 25th ranked pass defense against Cincinnati’s sixth ranked pass offense. The Bengals have been able to get a lot of production (1,087 receiving yards) out of the dynamic duo of WR’s Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco, but not a lot of points (42).
