Bragging rights on Tobacco Road will be handed out on Saturday afternoon in Winston-Salem, where the North Carolina Tar Heels (14-14, 8-18 ATS) will face the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (18-7, 13-9 ATS) in an NCAA basketball betting bash. The Tar Heels moved into the cellar in the ACC after suffering a 77-67 home loss to Florida State on Wednesday night. Three more defeats will assure that the Heels won’t be playing in postseason play as a sub-.500 team just a year after winning the National Championship. Wake Forest is continuing on its quest to capture college basketball’s biggest prize, but a 68-54 loss at NC State last Saturday didn’t help matters at all.
What is there to do if you’re HC Roy Williams? He can’t get anything out of his team of any merit, and he spent the majority of the game against FSU just shaking his head and getting aggravated on the sidelines. It’s not often that you see a UNC team struggle to score points, but this year’s team has done just that, particularly in ACC play. North Carolina has failed to break 71 points against anyone except for the Wolfpack in conference play since a 78-64 win over Virginia Tech on January 10th.
Wake Forest had just finally reached the Top-25 before falling flat on its face in two road games in conference. The Deacs had covered five straight and seven of their previous eight before that bad loss in Raleigh a week ago. F Aminu Al-Farouq had yet another double-double though, scoring 15 points and hauling in 14 boards. It was the superstar’s third straight double-double and his 17th on the season.
After North Carolina had gone 4-0 SU and ATS in its previous four meetings from 2006 to 2008, the Demon Deacons have stormed back and captured outright victories as 6.5-point underdogs in each of their L/2 tries against the boys in baby blue. The most important thing to remember about this bunch of Tar Heels is that they have still only won one legitimate road game all season long, and that came at NC State. Aside from that, they’re a pitiful 0-7 SU and just 1-6 ATS.
