MLB Predictions: May 24th 2013

Prediction: Phillies vs. Nationals Under 7
Washington is a huge park, great for pitchers, and a pair of righties are on the mound who don’t walk anyone and are tough to hit. Philly righty Kyle Kendrick (4-2, 2.82 ERA) has walked 14 in 60+ innings and the under is 6-1 in Phillies last 7 road games. The Philly offense is awful, 25th in baseball in runs scored, 26th in on base percentage. The under is 4-1 in the Phillies last 5 road games vs. a right-handed starter and they face Jordan Zimmermann (7-2, 1.62 ERA) who is having a dominant season. But this Washington offense is as bad as the Phillies, 28th in runs, batting average, OBP and slugging. The Under is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings, including 5-0 under the total in Washington. Play the Phillies/Nationals under the total. -Jim Feist
Prediction: Yankees -101
The Yankees starter David Phelps enters tonight in stellar form over his last 3 starts posting a 1.83 ERA. The Yankees are a very profitable 10-3 this season following 3 or more consecutive road games, and are a terrific 26-8 the last 2 seasons when playing on a Friday. The Tampa Bay starter Roberto Heranandez is 0-4 in his team starts since 5/30/2009 versus the Yankees with a monster 11.34 ERA and 2.58 WHIP. Hernandez has also been a bit shaky over his last 3 starts posting a lofty 5.14 ERA and 1.50 WHIP. Play on the New York Yankees as a money line selection. -Ross Benjamin

The Mariners have lost six in a row (all on the road) but I expect them to get back on track at home where they have won six of their last eight. Joe Saunders has been lights out at home where he’s 3-0 with an ERA of 0.94 in four starts. He’s been a tremendous investment in the home underdog role throughout his career. In fact, his teams are 17-8 in his last 25 starts as a home underdog of +100 or higher. Take Seattle. -Dave Price

The Cubs are worth a small wager at this price with Scott Feldman on the bump. The Cubs have won each of his last five starts, and his ERA is only 0.46 over his last three. Bronson Arroyo has been pitching well also, but not quite to the level of Feldman. Besides, the Reds are 1-4 in Arroyo’s last 5 home starts versus the Cubs and 1-4 in his last 5 starts versus division opponents. This is Cincy’s first home game following a lengthy road trip, and this has been a vulnerable spot. Detroit Red Wings vs. Chicago Blackhawks

We’ve yet to see a game in this series top five goals and I don’t see that changing as the Blackhawks face elimination on home ice on Saturday night.
Lost in Thursday’s 2-0 loss was the fact that Chicago goaltender Corey Crawford bounced back with arguably his best game of the series and that should bode well heading into Saturday’s contest.
Of course, the Blackhawks have been a terrific defensive team all season, allowing just two goals per game.
The Red Wings have really rounded into form over the course of these playoffs, particularly in their own end of the rink, where they’ve given up two goals or less in four of their last five games. Jimmy Howard has stood on his head over the last few games and that has only fueled the team’s confidence.
Going back to the regular season, the losing team has been held to one goal or less in seven of eight meetings here in 2013.

Needless to say, this is the most important game of the series so far and I suspect that will lead to an even tighter-checking affair. Free MLB Baseball Prediction From Doc’s Sports: Take #904 Detroit (-1.5 RL) over Minnesota (7 p.m., Thursday, May 23) Detroit Tigers starter Rick Porcello is on my list of pitchers to bet on right now as Porcello came out of Spring Training as a guy primed for a much better season in 2013 but struggled a bit out of the gates. That has all changed over the last month as Porcello has been as good as he has ever been in his career. He comes in with an ERA of just 3.24 in his last four starts and a WHIP below 1.00. Even more impressive than those numbers is the fact Porcello has gone three straight starts striking out six batters or more for the first time in his career and has averaged nearly a strikeout per inning during that stretch. This hasn’t been coming against bad offenses, either, as his last two starts came against two of the top offenses in all of baseball, the Indians and Rangers. The Tigers once again look to be one of the top teams in baseball this season at home. Detroit also leads both leagues hitting a scorching hot .280 as a team right now.
Minnesota has really started to fall apart as they went into Wednesday’s game losers of seven straight games overall. They have been outscored by a 43-19 margin in those seven losses. Left-hander Scott Diamond takes the hill for the Twins and comes in off his two worst outings of the season, allowing six earned runs in each game without making it out of the sixth inning in either contest. The high-powered Tigers offense should have little problems here against Diamond. Take Detroit minus the run and a half in this one.
