The Royals have been playing some pretty good baseball this month and they put ace Zach Greinke on the hill tonight, but they are being grossly overvalued in my opinion. Boston has won 9 of the last 12 meetings in this matchup and it will be looking to avenge yesterday’s loss. While Greinke has been dominant at home this season, he rarely gets adequate run support and the Royals are just 8-7 in his home starts because of it. Plus, Greinke is 0-2 lifetime against the Red Sox. Paul Byrd has struggled in his few starts for Boston this season, but he has slowly improved over his last 2, which were both Boston wins. In fact, the Red Sox are 5-0 in Byrd’s last 5 starts as an underdog and 5-1 in his last 6 starts period. The Red Sox are 8-1 in their last 9 games following a loss and a strong 21-6 in their last 27 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Royals are just 2-6 in Greinke’s last 8 home starts, 0-4 in his last 4 starts vs. the American League East, and 0-4 in his last 4 home starts vs. a team with a winning record. I’ll back the Red Sox showing solid underdog value for 1 unit here.

I’m going with the Royals here behind Zach Greinke. Why not the money line? I don’t see value for a 1-unit play on the money line of -155. Plus the way the Royals have been hitting gives me confidence behind Greinke. First thing you want to know is the public is all over the Red Sox at 65% because they are the Red Sox and the Royals are the Royals. However, Red Sox have not faced Greinke since 2007 which gives me reason to believe he will be his dominant self. I really like him to go out there and throw another great game as he is pushing for the Cy Young. Put yourself in his position he may never have another opportunity to win the Cy Young. He wants it and his teammates want to help him get it.

Greinke has a 1-0 record with a .45 ERA in his last 3 starts. He has a 1.80 ERA at night and at home he’s 8-3 with a 1.82 ERA. At home he has 126 K’s in 108.2 IP. Boston will struggle here tonight trying to make contact with Grenkes’ pitches. Boston has been hitting well .302 6.31 runs per 9 innings in their last 5 vs. RHP. However, let the record state that he faced a trio of terrible RHP from the Orioles and then Lenny Dinardo from the Royals last night. The Red Sox are not a dominant road team especially vs. RHP. On the season they are 37-38 and they are scoring just 4.29 runs per 9 vs. RHP. That is 1.38 runs per 9 innings less than their averages vs. LHP and they are hitting 32 points lower in average as well. Along with all that when they lose on the road which has been 38 times and have lost 78.9% of those games by more than 1 run. That is what gives us the advantage here and the value is tremendous at +140! Why do I think the Royals will hit?

Paul Byrd has not been good as much as he has been lucky. He only gave up 3 ER to the Angels after allowing 9 hits in 5.1 IP. On the season he’s given up 28 hits in 18.2 IP. This is the type of pitcher he has always been giving up many more hits than innings, but not walking many. This fits perfectly to the type of team the Royals are. They are not patient they are aggressive. They are 28th in BB’s and 18th in K’s which also means that they make contact with the ball. Last time Byrd faced a team like that which was also on the road was the White Sox. White Sox #18 in BB, and #23 in K’s they torched him for 10 hits in 2.1 IP and 7 ER. I look for a similar output here tonight. The Red Sox will turn it over to a bullpen that has a 7.33 ERA in their last 3 and a 6.59 in their last 5.

Baltimore +130 over Toronto:
These two teams are playing out the string in the American League, each with a keen eye on the future. Baltimore will start Chris Tillman, while the Jays will counter with David Purcey. Each team has high hopes for these guys.

Tillman (2-3, 4.50) was one of the centerpieces of the O’s/Mariners trade a few years ago that netted the O’s Adam Jones and George Sherrill. Tillman was the highest regarded pitching prospect in the O’s system, and has done a decent job since his callup. His most recent effort, last Wednesday against Tampa Bay was his best, going 6 2/3 innings allowing only 1 run. He’s 1-2 with a 4.18 ERA in his last 5 starts.

It’s been a bit more of a struggle for David Purcey in Toronto. The big lefty is 0-2 with a 6.32 ERA in 6 starts in 2009. He has spent most of the year in the minors after winning a rotation spot out of Spring Training. Brett Cecil has passed him on the depth chart, and Purcey will have some work to do to make the rotation in 2010. He’s 0-2 with a 7.40 ERA in his last 5 attempts.

On Monday night the free play is on the Over in the SanFrancisco at Arizona game. Rotation numbers 959/60 at 9:40 eastern. The pitching match up is what makes this play pop tonight. Barry Zito takes the mound tonight for the Giants and he has allowed 12 earned run in 16 innings over his last three starts vs Arizona. Doug Davis makes the start tonight for the Diamondbacks. In his home starts vs the Giants he has been rather easy to hit. He has allowed 9 runs and 16 hits vs the Giants in just 10 innings. The Giants are averaging over 5 runs per game over the past week. Both teams are cashing over 70% to the over on Monday nights. Take the over 8.5 runs tonight. In late phone action we had another big day on Sunday cashing the big play on the Jets and having another winning day after the 6-1 Saturday. The Under is now 15-6-1 in the last 22 head to head meetings between the Texas Rangers and the Oakland Athletics, including 10-4-1 this season with 11 of those games failing to exceed nine total runs combined.

We see no reason why tonight should be any different. The Rangers have basically fallen out of the wild card because of their inability to hit, totally changing their personality from the great hitting, poor pitching teams of the recent past. This 2009 version of the offense is averaging an anorexic 2.90 runs per game over the last 10 games with a team batting average of just .229 overall.

Things should not change tonight vs. Edgar Gonzalez and a red-hot Oakland bullpen. Gonzalez has proven to be serviceable in his two September starts, albeit in limited innings. He faced these Rangers last Tuesday and limited them to one run and four hits in four innings. This came on the heels of his first September start where he allowed one run and three hits in five innings vs. Kansas City, and once he is lifted, the Athletics bullpen has a great 1.90 ERA the last 10 games.

Now Texas starter Kevin Millwood has been hit hard lately, but the veteran still has a nice 3.94 ERA on the season and the Athletics should be the perfect remedy for him to get back on track. This is because he has now allowed two earned runs or less in each of his five starts vs. Oakland since the beginning of last season, with two of those starts coming this year.

Finally, Texas has the best Under record in the Major Leagues at 90-50-8, 64.3 percent, and given the recent head-to-head history here and the spacious dimensions of McAfee Coliseum, we look for that amazing Under pattern to continue.
