Florida heads home from its ugly embarrassing loss at Kentucky on Tuesday and things should get ugly in Gainesville Saturday afternoon. The Gators lost by 20 points to the Wildcats as they were dominated in nearly every aspect of the game. They were outshot by nearly 18 percent from the floor while getting outrebounded by 10 boards. The three-point shots were not falling for Florida and that is something that they have relied on this season in their 7-2 SEC record.

Not only is Florida looking to get some respect back after that Kentucky game but it will be also out to smack around Tennessee which gave the Gators their only other conference loss. Florida was all out of sorts in that game as well as it was outshot by a ton and its long balls were not finding the rim. The Gators are 2-5 on the road this season so a loss in Knoxville actually was not that surprising but a repeat certainly would be as Florida is a perfect 15-0 on its home floor. Tennessee is coming off a couple lopsided win but both of those games were at home where they are a solid 11-3. The problem has been on the road where the Volunteers have yet to win, going 0-7 including an 0-4 record in the SEC. Two of the games have been close but the latest two were losses by 18 and 25 points against Vanderbilt and Kentucky respectively. Tennessee is getting outscored by nearly 12 ppg on the road as the offense is averaging just 57 ppg on 38.5 percent shooting.

In the game against Kentucky, Florida shot 22.2 percent (6-27) from beyond the arc and 34.9 percent overall, both season lows. The Volunteers defense has been pretty solid this season but the numbers inflate when hitting the road. Not only is Tennessee winless on the road this season but the Volunteers have lost eight of their last nine road games against top 25 opponents. The Buckeyes lost their final three games of the regular season, including its 40-34 road loss against Michigan as an 8.5-point underdog in its regular season finale. On offense, the Buckeyes didn’t rank any higher than 27th in any meaningful statistical category and finished 75th in the country in scoring (25.1 ppg).

Defensively, the Buckeyes were also a middle-of-the-pack kind of team in most areas, though they did an outstanding job of stopping the pass by finishing 15th in the nation in against the pass (186.2 ypg) and a stellar 26th in points allowed per game (20.8 ppg).

Florida vs. Tennessee
Prediction: Florida Gators -9.5 / Under 51 (September 17th 2011)

The Tennessee Volunteers (2-0 SU, 1-0-1 ATS, 2-0 O/U) have looked surprisingly solid in winning each of their first two games this season, including Saturday’s 45-23 shellacking of Cincinnati as a 4-point home favorite. Nevertheless, the Vols will have to be on their ‘A’ game if they want to take out the 16th-ranked Florida Gators (2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS, 0-2 O/U) in this SEC showdown. The Gators ran roughshod over the UAB Blazers in their emphatic 39-0 shutout a week ago to cover the spread as a huge, 24-point home favorite. Now, both teams will get a stiff test, but really, this game may not be quite as close as some think it will be. As a matter of fact, I’m going to chalk up a solid SU win and ATS victory for the Gators, seeing as how they’ve won six straight in this series dating back to 2005 and seven of the L/9 meetings overall. I love the way the Gators are playing under new head coach Will Muschamp and I believe they will come out with a stellar effort in this huge home game against their conference rivals. Florida is 4-0 ATS in their L/4 home games and 5-0 in their L/5 games in the month of September while Tennessee will look to shake off its uninspiring 2-6 ATS mark in its last eight games as an underdog. The good news for Volunteers betting backers is the fact that the Vols are 4-0 ATS in their last four conference games and a nearly identical 4-1 ATS in their L/5 road games. The road team in this longtime rivalry is 7-3-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings, but Tennessee has lost four straight games to Florida by 10 points or more, including last season’s 31-17 pasting. I am a bit concerned by the outstanding lay of Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray as the young signal-caller has thrown a whopping seven TD passes so far and no interceptions.
