NFL Pick: Indianapolis Colts +7.5
Indianapolis has struggled this season without QB Peyton Manning, however most of their bad performances have come on the road where the Colts stand 0-5 SU and 1-4 ATS. Indianapolis is 0-3 SU at home, but they have been competitive in all three of those home games, losing by just 8, 3, and 4 point margins. Winless underdogs have also been a long-term winning play after the first month of the season and the Colts qualify in a solid 60% ATS situation based on that premise. Keep in mind that the Rams won outright as a +13.5 home underdog last week in a very similar situation. The Falcons might overlook this struggling non-conference opponent today, especially after a bye week and with a big divisional game versus New Orleans on deck next week. Atlanta remains an overrated team as the Falcons are averaging just 5.4 yards per play (versus opponents that allow 5.9 yppl). The Falcons are mediocre on defense as well and overall Atlanta is being out-gained 5.4 to 6.1 yards per play and has been outscored per game this season. -Steve Merril

NFL Pick: 49ers vs. Redskins Under 38
This is going to be the defensive battle of the day Sunday. The Washington Redskins are struggling mightily defensively, while the 49ers have one of the best defenses in the league. Like the Redskins, the 49ers lack explosive plays offensively. San Francisco ranks 23rd in total offense. The 49ers are only averaging 309.0 total yards/game. Washington ranks 19th in total offense. The Redskins are averaging 320.3 yards/game. The 49ers are only giving up 15.3 points/game and 329.1 yards/game. The Redskins are allowing 19.9 points/game and 343.6 yards/game. Washington is also scoring just 16.6 points/game. The UNDER is 4-0 in 49ers last 4 games as a road favorite of 3.5-10.0. The UNDER is 7-0 in Redskins last 7 vs. a team with a winning record. The UNDER is 5-1 in Redskins last 6 games overall. Bet the UNDER in this game Sunday. -Jack Jones

Free Play from Doc’s Sports. #113 Take Philadelphia Eagles over Washington Redskins (Sunday 1 pm Fox) The Eagles have been by far and away the most disappointing team in 2011 but this is the first time we are getting some value with them with regards to the point spread. The Redskins sit atop the NFC East and a win this game will all but knock out the Eagles with regards to a division title. The visitor has dominated this series covering 8 of the last 9 match-ups. In the last meeting, the Eagles won 59-28 and that alone shows me how much more talent Philadelphia has compared to Washington. The Eagles are 13-6 ATS in their last 19 road games against teams with a winning home record. The Redskins are 9-17 ATS (3 pushes) against teams with a losing record. The Eagles are too good of a team and have too good of a head coach to see their season fall apart. They need this game and they get it in a big way as we collect in the process as well. Redskins -3 1/2 hosting Cardinals It’s becoming clear that Washington is much improved in Year 2 of the Mike Shanahan era.

There is talent on defense, an underrated wide receiving group and the locker room atmosphere is healthier with Albert Haynesworth, Donovan McNabb and Clinton Portis removed from the scene. The team is more focused without the distractions of those three controversial veterans.

The question here is are the Redskins improved enough to cover more than a field goal at home against Arizona?

I say the answer is yes. The Redskins are far better defensively than the Cardinals. The Cardinals hosted Carolina last week. Their strategy was to key on DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. The result of that was Cam Newton throwing for 422 yards and two touchdowns in his NFL debut. Newton never threw for 400 yards when he was at Auburn and at Blinn Junior College.

The Redskins have a more balanced attack than Carolina. Tim Hightower is an excellent fit in Shanahan’s zone-run blocking scheme. He also knows the Cardinals well from having been there the previous three seasons.

Rex Grossman has run hot and cold throughout his NFL career, usually more cold than hot. But Shanahan has coached Grossman up. Grossman also has a number of quality targets. The Redskins lack a receiving star, but they have better depth at the position than many teams. It was estimated that 70 percent of Grossman’s first-look targets last week against the Giants were open.

Look for Grossman to have another strong game as Arizona is weak at linebacker and inexperienced at cornerback with two first-year starters.

The Cardinals are potentially explosive. But right now Kevin Kolb is a work in progress learning a new system. The Redskins held five of eight foes to less than 17 points at home last year.

Arizona doesn’t travel well. The Cardinals have failed to cover seven of the past eight times as a road ‘dog. This is a cross-country trip for the Cardinals with an early start time for them. That doesn’t bode well.

The Redskins are a serious darkhorse contender to win the NFC East. They are a step above the Cardinals. Throw in home-field advantage with a solid situational edge and it should mean Washington wins this game by a touchdown or more.

The Scoop: The New York Giants (10-6 SU, 7-9 ATS) and Washington Redskins (6-10 SU, 8-6-2 ATS) will hook up in a early NFC East meeting that should reveal a lot about where both teams are heading the season. The Giants have perennially had one of the league’s best rushing attacks and will lean on that strength while getting just enough passing from Eli Manning.

Washington just wants to get back to being a respectable team after winning just six games in 20101, but they’ve got a quarterback battle going on between mediocre veteran Rex Grossman and the unproven John Beck after foolishly parting ways with six-time pro bowler McNabb after last season, casing head coach Mike Shanahan’s reputation to take a huge hit. To make things even worse for the Redskins is the fact that they’ve lost five straight against the G-Men.
