Tennessee vs. Mississippi State Betting Odds, Pick & Prediction: March 6th 2010
The Mississippi State Bulldogs (21-9, 13-11-1 ATS) may have their entire season hanging in the balance on Saturday night in Starkville when they take on the Tennessee Volunteers (22-7, 11-14-1 ATS) in a critical college basketball betting duel. The Dawgs are sitting with pins and needles on the NCAA Tournament bubble right now, and they probably need 2-3 more wins to feel like they’re in good shape. They had won three straight to get back into the discussions before losing at Auburn 89-80 on Wednesday night. Tennessee fired off another win at home against Arkansas on Wednesday as well to help make a case to put itself in one of the top four slots in March Madness.
Sometimes it’s hard to see how HC Bruce Pearl continues to make this Tennessee team of his win games, but he keeps finding a way to get the job done. The Vols are only getting 13.1 points per game out of G Scotty Hopson and 12.8 per game out of F Wayne Chism. Neither of those numbers would’ve seemed likely to cut it at the beginning of the year, let alone after taking G Tyler Smith’s dismissal from the team into consideration. UT is back up to 75.0 points per game after scoring 80 against the Hogs, but that was the first time that it had scored above its point average since February 6th.
Not only do the Dawgs have a lot at stake at the national level in this one, but they’re also looking to nail down the outright regular season title in the SEC West. The defense had better hope that that loss in Auburn was nothing more than a bump in the road and not a trend that is soon to be ongoing. MSU only forced eight turnovers and allowed the Tigers to shoot 51.7% from the floor and 45.8% from three-point range in the loss. Keeping up with high scoring teams has been difficult for the Bulldogs all season long, as they don’t have enough scoring options to compete with these high octane clubs.
This is a rematch of last season’s SEC Championship Game, a battle that the Bulldogs won 64-61. It was their first SU win over the Vols since 2004. Still, Tennessee is 6-3 ATS in its L/9 NCAA basketball betting duels with MSU.
