Two teams that are struggling in ACC play look to right the ship in Chapel Hill on Wednesday night, when the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (12-4, 6-7 ATS) get it on with the North Carolina Tar Heels (12-6, 6-10 ATS). The Demon Deacons have already been blasted once on Tobacco Road, as they were hammered by Duke 90-70 on Sunday night. The defending national champions have uncharacteristically dropped three of their L/4 games, including a 73-71 loss at home to Georgia Tech over the weekend.

The pace of Wake Forest’s game is incredibly up-tempo. HC Dino Gaudio’s team is scoring 76.9 points per game, but the greater indicator comes on the other side of the ball. Even though the Deacs are holding their opponents to just 37.1% shooting from the floor for the year, they are just an average team in terms of points allowed (67.9 per game). Wake may be outmatched and outclassed by the Heels, but it probably will have the most talented player on the floor in the form of F Aminu Al-Farouq. He is easily leading the team in both scoring (17.6 points per game) and rebounding (11.6 boards per game). Al-Farouq has posted double-doubles in seven of his L/9 games.

The Tar Heels may have won the National Championship with their guard play last year, but if they’re going to rebound from this slump and repeat as champs, it’s going to be the inside game that gets the job done. Fs Deon Thompson and Ed Davis are two of the holdovers from that title team, and they’re leading the way this year for HC Roy Williams. The inside duo is averaging a combined 29.6 points and 17.0 rebounds per game. G Marcus Ginyard is going to have to get some more production, as he’s only scored a total of eight points in his L/3 games.

You have to go back to 2003 to find the last time that Wake Forest won a college basketball betting affair in Chapel Hill SU. Since then though, UNC has gone 5-2 both SU and ATS. The winning team in this series has also covered the spread in 13 straight. Coming into last season, the previous five meetings had been determined by any average of 21.0 points per game. Wake Forest won the ’09 clash between these traditional ACC titans 92-89.
