Week 6 NFL Football Betting Results: Odds, Lines, & Scores
NFL Football Picks October 15th, 2007By Sean Murphy, lead handicapper with The Miller Group of Covers Experts
Forget about the Patriots, the story of Week 6 has to be Vinny Testaverde. I can only imagine the flood of action the books received when he was named the Panthers starting quarterback for Sunday’s game. Not only did he start, he threw for over 200 yards and a touchdown and didn’t turn the ball over once, leading his team to a 15-point road win over the Cardinals.
If that doesn’t sum up the unpredictable nature of the NFL, nothing else does. Here’s the complete rundown of Sunday’s action.
Bengals at Chiefs (+3, 42 ½)
Final: Chiefs 27, Bengals 20
Let the finger pointing begin, or should we say, continue. The Bengals have dropped four games in a row since opening the season with a win over the Ravens. That leaves them in the AFC North basement, two games back of the third-place Browns. As for the Chiefs, they find themselves in a first-place tie with the Chargers, and improved to 2-1 at Arrowhead. A 17-point fourth quarter helped this one sail over the total.
Texans at Jaguars (-6 ½, 37)
Final: Jaguars 37, Texans 17
It was close for a half, but the Jaguars eventually proved to be too much for the Texans. You had to expect a little revenge would be in order after Houston took both meetings last season. With four straight wins, the Jags have a full head of steam heading into next Monday’s showdown with the Colts. They now sit a half-game back of the idle Colts in the AFC South.
Dolphins at Browns (-4, 44 ½)
Final: Browns 41, Dolphins 31
You would be hard-pressed to find anyone who predicted the Browns would be the second highest scoring team in the AFC through the first six weeks of the season. Braylon Edwards caught two touchdown passes as Cleveland handed Miami its sixth consecutive loss to open the season. It was the Dolphins’ first true ATS road loss, after going 1-0-2 in their first three games away from home.
Vikings at Bears (-4 ½, 35 ½)
Final: Vikings 34, Bears 31
This one looked like a defensive slugfest on paper, but that’s certainly not the way it played out on the field. Adrian Peterson led the charge as the Vikings won on a 55-yard, last-second field goal by Ryan Longwell. The Bears just can’t seem to gain any momentum and now find themselves dead last in the NFC North. The over has cashed in each of the Bears’ last four games.
Eagles at Jets (+3.5, 43)
Final: Eagles 16, Jets 9
Chad Pennington’s time is running out. He failed to get the job done yet again as the Jets fell to 1-5 on the season. If he can’t get something going next week in Cincinnati, we’ll likely see the start of the Kellen Clemens era. The Eagles are now 9-0 following a bye week under Andy Reid.
Rams at Ravens (-9 ½, 36 ½)
Final: Ravens 22, Rams 3
The Ravens defense absolutely feasted on the depleted Rams, recording four sacks and five interceptions in a 22-3 victory. Their offense continued to sputter, producing only 248 total yards. Kyle Boller started in place of Steve McNair, who was once again sidelined with a nagging back injury. It was the Ravens’ first pointspread victory of the season.
Titans at Buccaneers (-3, 37)
Final: Buccaneers 13, Titans 10
Who knows how this one would have played out had Vince Young not pulled up lame midway through the third quarter. Kerry Collins did lead the Titans on a game-tying drive with just over a minute left in the fourth, but the Bucs marched right back down the field. Matt Bryant kicked a 43-yard field goal to seal the win. It was the Titans’ second-straight ATS loss, while the Bucs improved to 3-0 ATS at home.
Redskins at Packers (-3, 40 ½)
Final: Packers 17, Redskins 14
A returned fumble for a touchdown proved to be the difference as the Packers held the Redskins scoreless in the second half. It was an important win after giving one away last Sunday night against Chicago. Green Bay will head into its bye week while the Redskins will return home to host the Cardinals next Sunday. Thanks in large part to a scoreless fourth quarter, this one played comfortably under the posted total.
Panthers at Cardinals (-5, 38 ½)
Final: Panthers 25, Cardinals 10
If you would have told people that Vinny Testaverde and Tim Rattay would square off at some point this season, you probably would have been directed to the nearest insane asylum. That’s exactly the matchup that played out in Arizona on Sunday. In the end, it was the 43-year-old Testaverde who prevailed. Carolina improves to a perfect 4-0 SU and ATS on the road with the win, while the Cards suffered their second ATS defeat in a row after starting the season 4-0 against the number.
Patriots at Cowboys (+5 ½, 53)
Final: Patriots 48, Cowboys 27
Alright, so this one didn’t exactly live up to the hype. But what else did you expect? The Patriots proved yet again that they’re in a class all their own, outscoring the Cowboys 27-3 over the final 20 minutes to run away with a 48-27 victory. Next up for the Patriots is a trip to Miami where they’ll face a Dolphins team that has given them trouble in the past. Don’t bet on that trend continuing in 2007.
Raiders at Chargers (-9 ½, 44)
Final: Chargers 28, Raiders 14
The Chargers have been a tough team to get a read on this season. It certainly appears as if they’ve now found their rhythm. Ladainian Tomlinson turned in his best effort of the season, rushing for 199 yards and three touchdowns. The defense was also firing on all cylinders, sacking Raiders QB Daunte Culpepper six times and picking off a pair of passes. The Raiders’ streak of four consecutive overs to start the season came to an end.
Saints at Seahawks (-5 ½, 42 ½)
Final: Saints 28 Seahawks 17
Finally, the Saints have decided to start playing football. Well, for a half at least. New Orleans used 28 first-half points to get past the Seahawks, who fall back to .500 on the season. New Orleans improves to 1-4, but still finds itself at the bottom of the NFC South. This one narrowly eclipsed the posted total, despite just seven points being scored in the entire second half.
